Jewel Penthouse suites

I know there are SE and SF suites with the one facing forward and the other aft. I wondered if there is any wind protection on the forward facing ones other than the standard type railing. Any deck better than another? With the aft facing suites any preference as to in board vs out board?

Thanks for your help.

I've sailed in the aft penthouses. Deck 10 is the best, it has the largest balconies. I like 10164 or 10664, because you only have a cabin on one side and I think the views are better because you can see to the side. Also, you have cabins above and below, which means they are much more quiet.

We also have sailed in Aft facing accommodations and have noticed that while deck 10 does have the largest balconies, they also offer less privacy from above...We couldn't help noticing that while on deck 11 that we could look down and pretty much see whatever was going on there on that balcony...Where as on other decks, (Aft facing accommodation) you can not see down into the balcony...We usually prefer to take something on either 11 or 9 for just that reason...To each there own, just saying...

We were on deck 8 in an aft-penthouse (8130) and our friends were next to us in 8132. We loved our room, but thought our balcony was a little small and would choose a different deck if we went on the Jewel again. Because our room was on the corner, our balcony angled and we had less room than our friends, but we still spent a lot of time out there. We could have done with less furniture so it would have been more enjoyable. We were directly above the shops and below deck 9. We never felt that our privacy was compromised.

Good luck choosing!

We like the forward-facing penthouse cabins on the Jewel. The following is a cabin review we did on our recent Alaskan cruise on the Jewel.

Cabin: SE/9500 Alaska July 2015 There are a lot of reviews on the pros and cons of front facing balcony cabins. As a veteran of many cruises, I can say that this was the absolute best room for for an Alaskan cruise. The Jewel has 8 forward facing penthouse suites and 4 owner’s suites. The rooms on Deck 9 have extra large balconies (300 sq ft). So, to correct some misconceptions, the front facing balcony is fully usable day and night, in port and at sea. If you stand right at the rail, it is a bit windy, but not intolerable. Because of the hull design, step back a couple of feet and you can enjoy the view with just a very gentle breeze. Or sit on your deck chair at the rail, the wind sweeps up and above you, letting you fully enjoy the beautiful Alaskan scenery. The walls right a railing are was waist high, allowing you to socialize with your neighbors. If you want a bit of privacy, just move back a couple of feet, and you are behind floor to ceiling walls. Each day, we sat for hours watching Alaska unfold around us. Neighbors and even the bridge crew above would point out sea life with our 200 degree view of sea in front of us. We saw countless whales, some fluking, some breaching. Some right along the ship. Many further out. On two separate days, we sailed through large pods of dolphins. Hundreds of dolphins swimming on either side of the ship. On the day we went to the glaciers, we spend the whole afternoon from the time we left Juneau until dusk watching the glaciers unfold in front of us. If you’re going to Alaska, spend a bit more money for a front facing balcony!

Have you actually stayed in a Deck 10 aft-facing suite, because I have, and it's just not true. Unless you are standing or sitting right at the railing, you are shielded from above. Check the photo of the stern of the Jade, below, and note the overhangs. I would not hesitate to book an SF aft-facing suite on Deck 10 (which has a much larger balcony than the aft-facing suites on the other decks) and in fact we are treating ourselves to our second ever suite in a few months, and it's on Deck 10 on the Gem. Can't wait!

Here's the Jade; the woman in the middle is standing on the balcony of 10668.

Be that as it may, was on the Pearl last Dec in an aft facing mini suite on deck 10 right above the deck 11 penthouse...We were shocked to see that we could see just about everything that was going on, this was a surprise to us...Perhaps the Jewell is different, when we went to book an aft facing penthouse on the Jade we booked on deck 9 for just that reason...

Have a nice day...

Been in an aft penthouse in both the Jewel and Pearl and it has never been an issue with those on deck 11. They can only see if you are standing out next to the railing and, to be perfectly honest, I didn't do anything on the balcony that I was worried about someone else seeing.

We've sailed in both and prefer aft-facing. We find we use the balcony more. We really like the sliders on the aft-facing cabins while the forward facing cabins have a door and a heavy outer hatch that the steward closed every night. Otherwise, you could hear the wind whistle through. We were on deck 10 under the bridge and the drapes had to be closed at night because the light interfered with operation on the bridge. The wind wasn't an issue unless you were standing by the forward railing. Privacy wasn't a concern but the bridge looks down on all the deck 10 cabins and, from deck 10, you can see the balconies on deck 9.

If you decide on the SE, try to get one of the center penthouses on deck 10 directly under the bridge. We had 10000 and it's a bit larger inside although not quite as much outdoor space as the others.

I am another that agrees that no one can see you from above on deck 10 unless you are right at the railing. Been on deck 10 on the Pearl, Dawn and Jewel and returning to our favorite location of 10666 in just 5 weeks on the Jewel. The Balcony is definitely the biggest of the aft on deck 10 and actually I prefer the middle ones because they are slight bigger than the end ones. Last year we were in the Haven 1 bedroom and the balcony was just too small, so going back to our aft 10 Suite.

Thanks for all the responses. With the promo they have now I think we will give it a try. Been mostly on Princess & RCL and a few others here and there. Haven't had a bad one yet so why not something new. Pretty sure we will do the 2/17 Panama Canal.

Thanks again.

I've done the Panama Canal twice (neither time on NCL) and it is a fantastic cruise. Hope you enjoy it.

had 10666(SF) on the pearl for the trans panama repo for next year since we love aft; but i was able to upgrade to 15000(H2) for less money and better perks recently so i made the change; probably a better view for the panama canal crossing anyway but i will stick to the afts like 9916 on the breakaway for the balcony space;
