I have been on a few cruises and learned fast about settling up the night before debarkation.

My question is has anyone ever been suprised by there final bill and not have enough cash and credit to settle up? Im sure it has to happen but what happens if you just cant pay your bill?

I bet there are some good stories and 1st hand accounts of others who just simply cant pay

1) if you have a cash account then they will not let you charge more than what you give them in cash.

2) if you use a card, for the most part they will know if your card is good as they will charge bit by bit as the week goes on. Is it possible that someone spend more than their available credit? Sure. And there have been a couple stories here. But I think it is very rare. As they know what they are doing. An aside: this is one reason why they suggest you do not use a debit card.

The figures might not be totally accurate but the incident is!!

I was in the Atrium waiting to see the Latitudes Rep and was a little early. I could see that a person waiting at Guest Services was holding his bill and getting agitated.

When he got to the desk it was all bluster about the size of his bill and that he hadn't spent "that much". He was demanding to see "someone in authority" so the desk clerk took his name and suitestateroom number and went 'backstage'.

About 5 minutes later the manager came out and before the guest could say anything said "I agree that you didn't spend $4500 while on the cruise, sir, you only spent $900"; the reply was "Great, then my account will be reduced?!!"

"I'm afraid not, sir, the other $3600 was spent by your wife, son and daughter". "BUT .......... (unrepeatable in pleasant company)". "Here, sir, is the authority you signed when handing over your credit card as you boarded the cruise liner; I suggest you take up the extra spending with your family!!"

With that the guest walked off with a very red face, "muttering" profanities at the top of his voice.

Oh to have been a fly on the wall in that stateroom!! :D

I have had some incredibly large accounts due to expensive excursions, such as the Antarctic Landing on my SA cruise and the Exclusive Rome on my TA.

BUT I am "Type A" and do an extensive spreadsheet itemizing everything beforehand.

What comes to mind is that the UBP might help some individuals make a few decisions that up their tabs. Liquid courage and all that stuff.

Wait! I have UBP for MY next cruise. Eek!

Yes, this phenomenon is exactly why all Las Vegas casinos serve unlimited free drinks to everyone gambling!

Luckily for me, I don't gamble, and have no interest in ship excursions, shopping on board, specialty restaurants, etc.

I am a big drinker, though, so having the UBP as a perk almost guarantees that I will have almost no onboard spending. Just tips, which I will do in cash anyway.

If you don't have enough funds to cover your expenses, they will make you sign some sort of payment contract....or they will stop your ability to charge before you go over your limit.

This is what happened to somebody who tried to skip out on paying the bill. It's two parts:

Part 1

Part 2

Enjoy!:)
