Fantasy class ship-what's the downside of being on the Upper deck?

I was booking my cruise the other night and the computer got as far as cabin choice, which I did, for the Empress level, and then it locked me out. When I went back in, it said the cabin I chose was taken.:(

 

I love Riviera-great when you get back from port

I've stayed on main-great cabin size

We've stayed on Empress-closer to ship events and dinner,

 

But this time, because we never have tried it, we booked a porthole on the Upper deck. What's the upside or down side of staying on the Upper level?

Downside: you may be called an "upper decker"

You might hear a little more noise when getting into port, but it is not bad. I think you will like your cabin, especially if you were going to be in an interior. If you want a really quiet interior cabin, choose one of the V-Cabins on the Verandah deck.

We've had U154 on both the Paradise and Elation. Across from a laundry room. Only issue was around 4am the smell of cooking garlic would wake me up starving.:). Have stayed in other cabins on Upper and have had no issues.

Nope, not entirely true. We avoid the first four cabins off the center stairwell Imagination and Inspiration. The smoking section of the Casino bar is right near the stairwell and the smoke travels downward. Didn't have this issue on the Paradise or Elation.

No downside, prefer Empress deck, but had to do upper last cruise no problems.

Hey marshhawk - my nephew and I stayed in porthole U15 before. Cabin was very stuffy first day. We got them to open vent in ceiling, then understood why it had been closed! Lots of cigarette smell comes in from somewhere. That was several years ago and maybe they've fixed it but I wanted to give you a heads up.

I decided to try one of the square-ish interiors on Upper on Fascination (U99). Only cabin I've ever had that I thought was a huge mistake. There was this awful "whump-whump-whump" throbbing air-pressure sound/feeling that literally made my ears ache. It was worse over DD's bed. I never said anything because we were sold out. These days, I'd probably at least have someone come and tell me what was making the sound/generating the air pressure.

 

Anyway, you probably won't encounter that in a PH cabin.

 

Other than that, the location was fine. We were midship, which I like. I don't really care for forward cabins because of the additional movement, but enjoy the extra exercise to get places. We don't all think proximity to the buffet is a good thing! ;)

thanks! we booked U7, it looked just a tad bigger in the deck plans. I forgot about the smoke smell, I had read that before, I think it's because it is vented to the staff bar.....

I always say try something new, this will be it, oh and cruising from mobile, and going to a new (for us) Mayan site.:)

It depends on the class of ship. With any porthole room just watch out for those thrusters kicking in early morning while pulling into port! The higher the better.

True but I have to get up early anyway, they don't bother me, because I wake with the sun, or before actually. But for someone who sleeps in, you are right, it does get a bit noisy, anchor and all.

Call me crazy, but I actually get all giddy when I've had those forward staterooms and everything starts rumbling as we approach a port. It reminds me that I'm on a ship and I'm about to go ashore to explore another destination. [emoji3]

We were in U4 on the Paradise our first and only PH the cabin was just ok.

The up side is that there cabins above and below the Upper deck and less foot traffic in front of the ship. No down side, we always book porthole cabins when we can, the little nook where the portholes are make a great place for storage...
