Saving deck chairs....

I haven't been on these boards long but, from what I have been reading, everyone is against saving deck chairs. How can it be that everyone is against it but it still happens? Are some of you not practicing what you preach? ;) Or are the people doing it not on the these boards and don't know better?

I will soon be taking my second cruise (the first one was 15+ years ago) and was hoping the practice of chair hogging had been addressed.

Cruise critic members make up very tiny portion of cruise ship passengers.

I understand that, but it is a sample of the overall cruising population and the sampling indicates that saving chairs is bad. Does anyone defend the practice?

the people that chair hog will not post that they do it on cc. So you will see all the people against it but you wont see the people who chair hog. it would be pretty silly if they posted here

There have been several people that claimed to be chogs, they were probably just bored and wanted to stir the pot.

But almost always those threads get heated then deleted.

On my last cruise (Breeze) they were pretty good about preventing chair hogs. One deck hand was closely monitoring the chairs, marking the time and then taking the items to the towel station if left for too long to free them up. I can't recall how long they let elapse before clearing them.

A quick search here of the Carnival forum turned up 20 pages on the topic, this thread has 235 replies:

Well I read through that whole thread (sigh, Friday at home, married with children :)) and only saw one instance where my definition of unfair chair saving was (pitifully) defended. Almost all others fell onto the side of 40 minutes is the max time that should be allowed for chair saving. So why is it still happening if everyone agrees it's wrong?

Why is it still happening? Because some staff members would rather avoid a confrontation with passengers who feel that they are above the rules, rather than enforce the rules.

Just move thier stuff to the closest towel cart. Works every time.

You are a problem solver. lol :)

Seriously though Carnival has like 90,000 passengers a week now, over 200,000 if you count all their Carnival Plc brands. I don't think most people take the time to do much in depth research. People on CC tend to be the vocal minority. Not to mention the half dozen other similar sights and forums.

My favorite are those who complain now about those who are actually sitting in the chairs but will use then for a large portion of the day. I have really never seen it be as big an issue some in thus board make it out to be, not saying it doesn't happen.

I'm sure I will get flamed, but with that said...

I do get up early and get the location I want. Mostly at the serenity. Never at the pools..

I do stay in that lounger from about 8am to 2pm ish..

I do go to breakfast and I do go to lunch.

I have always been respectful of the time.

But what I also do is this:

I bring a small dry erase board with me. I write the time I leave on it. I also take a picture of my little sign. I do this so I have documentation that I didn't alter the time or some else.

I have never had an issue with anyone complain, touch or remove my things.

Maybe this kind of works.

its far from a representative sample

but honestly I think most people know its douchey, but they honestly don't care as long as they get their seat

Perhaps issue tickets am. or pm.?

Have been on two carnival cruises and had no problem. QM2 was on sea days. We saw a family of 6 and two children save loungers at the aft pool everyday when we were walking the deck. Only two were used until the two younger couples turned up at noon. Likewise a Princess 10 day cruise, virtually impossible unless up at 7am. Even saw many reserved when the ship was in port.

I had the same opinion, until my most recent cruise. It was eye-opening. Rows and rows of empty saved chairs at 8 a.m. every morning, and many empty saved chairs all day long all over lido and Serenity. People saving sun and shade seats for hours, with cute clips to hold their towels on the chair backs. On past cruises, I had never seen chair-saving like this and thought it was being blown out of proportion on the boards.

I think it was the combination of experienced cruisers (gold and platinum cards were more common than red), people spending more $$ on their cruise having entitlement attitudes, and large groups traveling together.

I have to say the Breeze was GOOD! They were out and about putting stickers on the chairs.

DH and I got there around 9? Set up our chairs and went to grab breakfast to bring back to our loungers.

Gone maybe 12 minutes?

There was a sticker on our chair, and there was also a lady ready to take over our chairs.

She was NASTY. Her and DH almost got into it. She didn't understand the whole concept. I think she assumed since we were "stickered" the chairs were free game.

We explained that we had 40 minutes AFTER the sticker was applied.

She was SUCH a *****.

Needless to say, she walked away, mumbling under her breath....

Interesting morning......

Great idea but you really don't need to do this. If you got up early enough to get a chair and you use it, you shouldn't have to explain your whereabouts.

I find that the mass number of people that complain about chair hogs are those that sleep in past noon and expect those to find a chair upon getting to the Lido at 1pm. Get up at a decent hour and you'll have no problems finding a chair

I am an early riser on cruises and I hate chair hogs.

On two different mornings, I was looking for a lounger on lido after breakfast at around 8 a.m. to sit for a very short time. The only loungers not being saved were on the outskirts of the deck in the shade. Other people unsuccessfully searching for a chair at about the same time included elderly couples who struggled to walk and a dad who wanted to supervise his young child in the pool.

If I am looking for a seat at 1 p.m., it's because I spent the morning supervising my children. Why should you "save" your seat while you sit somewhere else (lunch, casino, a shadier spot), when I could sit happily in your empty chair for thirty minutes?

I could have left towels on a lido lounger and a serenity lounger at 7 a.m. and then returned hours later to use "my" spots, but that would have been wrong.

why should it make a difference when someone gets up to look for a chair.

chair hoggers are wrong at 6am

chair hoggers are wrong at 9am

chair hoggers are wrong at noon

chair hoggers are wrong at 6pm

chair hoggers are wrong at 10pm

no one should be told that they need to get up early so preempt the chair hoggers. if there are butts in the chairs... then people are out of luck but if someone is saving it... its just wrong. plain and simple
