Better to fly in LHR or LGW

Also note that none of the USA carriers fly into LGW. You have service via BA and VS, also Westjet from Canada. You don't say where you are coming from, so that also plays a part in any question of which London airport to use.

Finally, you can fly into Southampton via Amsterdam (and some other cities) and skip both LHR and LGW.

I would opt for the Amsterdam transfer to Southampton as well.

Both LHR and LGW are notorious for their ATC delays. While this may be the case in pretty much any airport, a connecting flight from Amsterdam (served with quite a lot of routes by Delta and KLM and also American and United)

Avoiding London can be a good thing, specially since you will need to have transportation from London down to Southampton.

If you insist on flying into London (price or other reasons) I really don't have any preference. LHR is a lot bigger and can be a zoo, but LGW is often jammed and has a lot of ATC delays since it only has 1 runway

Thanks for your help, never thought about flying into Amsterdam, might look into that. We are flying from Atlanta, the day we sail most likely, just trying to find the easiest way.

Flying in same day the cruise departs? Then there are other issues I'd worry about more than whether to land at LHR or LGW!

Definitely recommend leaving the US two days before your cruise. You fly overnight and arrive the next morning before traveling from London to Southampton. It helps to have a day to recover from jet lag etc and maybe take a day trip to places like Winchester or Salisbury.

if there are flight problems you need enough leeway to get your cruise on time.
