donaldsc Posted February 3, 2016 #28 Share Posted February 3, 2016 Withe exception of the party that was left behind because the husband had a heart attack, anyone who is left behind deserves to be left behind. Also, the ship should not wait for anyone. It should depart promptly on time even if the person is running down the dock. This may seem harsh but we all know people who are always late and this might teach them. We have a friend who missed the first day of her Hawaii vacation because she got to the airport after flight check in time. You can be sure that she never did that again so the lesson worked. varoo Posted February 3, 2016 #29 Share Posted February 3, 2016 I think the lesson is to be a responsible adult and keep an eye on your time and get back to the ship with time to spare. We never take ship excursions, and we have never gotten close to missing the ship, with the above being the sole exception;) True, but circumstances are not always under our control, even for the most responsible adult with the best of planning and intentions. In deciding whether to take a ship excursion or a private excursion, or just go off on one's own, other important considerations are the location of the next port where you can catch up with the ship and how you would get there. Some private vendors will take responsibility for getting you to your ship if you should take one of their tours and miss the ship. In Alaska many of the private tour operators will tell you that they will do that if you ask them "what if" questions. They work in cooperation with one another and are very conscientious about getting passengers back to the ship on time, even more so than we are ourselves because their reputation and livelihood are at stake. We do not consider it to be much of a risk at all going off on our own in St. Thomas when the next port is San Juan, or in Victoria when the next port is Seattle or Vancouver. So glad that all worked out well for your DH. If you had to be stuck abroad somewhere, how lucky that it was in a nice location like Rhodes. Rare hcat Posted February 3, 2016 #30 Share Posted February 3, 2016 (edited) Has anyone done the Marriott @ St. Kitts and did you enjoy the day? Thanks. Sorry..we did not spend a day there but friends vacationed there and enjoyed it. A few yr ago we spent my b-day at Frigate Bay Resort...very caribbean low rise buildings, non luxury resort with large pool with swim up bar and nice lunch at Jasmines. There was a path along the Marriot golf course (i think) that went out to a nice beach not sure if swimming was allowed there. We had great day. Got a cab there no problem...but took a very long time for one to come back for us...and this place was not walkable to port as was Palms Ct garden...liked that place much more.. Our approach recently is to take ship's excursions if venturing beyond walking distance..so many ports now have terrible traffic delays with everyone coming back to the ships at once. wallie5446 Posted February 3, 2016 #31 Share Posted February 3, 2016 Renman22: Getting ready to board Equinox in about 30 days. Wondered what your opinion of the new World Class Bar was and also impressions of the entertainment (specifically the party band). Thanks. Debbie We were on over Thanksgiving and Mr Santos was a true artist! Oh, and a dang great bartender too!
donaldsc Posted February 3, 2016 #32 Share Posted February 3, 2016 We are just off the 10 day Equinox Caribbean and after about a million cruises someone actually got left behind." A million cruises. I doubt that. Lets assume that all cruises are 7 days long and the ship cruises constantly. That is 52 cruises per year. Based on this, it would take 19,230 years for a ship to do 1 million cruises. Big Beer Gut Posted February 3, 2016 #33 Share Posted February 3, 2016 Is dependent on which port you ares visiting and IF GOD FORSAKE you do not have pass ports with you. Example Missing a ship in Cozumel or Aruba if you have PP and CC not a great problem to make it to another Major port.I guess chalk it up to another travel adventure and we, well most of us, know that travel is not rocket science and stuff happens. It's not uncommon for the ship to leave before everyone has returned. Before the ship leaves without you, the crew will go to your cabin and get your passport and leave it with the pier agent. If you watch carefully you will often see the shore side representative getting a package from the ship just before it leaves.
waterbug123 Posted February 3, 2016 #34 Share Posted February 3, 2016 I guess the lesson here is to take shore excursions through the ship and you won't get left behind?? I think the greater lessons are these: - be mindful of the time, especially if local time and ship's time are different - always allow extra time. If it takes 30 min to get back to the ship, don't wait to leave til 30 or even 45 before you need to be back. You just never know when cabs will be in short supply or traffic will be bad or a road will be closed - travel with a credit card that can be used to book a last minute hotel, plane ticket etc. - travel with a passport so you easily fly to the next port
MommaBear55 Posted February 3, 2016 #35 Share Posted February 3, 2016 We were traveling with a group of 80 once and two of our group got left behind. They either did not keep their watches on ship time, or they lost track of time as they shopped. The ship waited as long as it could, so we were literally 5 feet from the dock when they sauntered down the pier. We had a Labadee day, then two sea days after that, so they list 1/3 of their cruise.
