Room Not Ready

Here's what I grasp. I grasp the handle of the fire door, unlatch it and walk to my cabin. I do it as soon as we board.

Take a scan on Google at USCG regulations regarding fire doors. It's a learning experience, the doors are never locked.

.

So just because a door isn't locked means it's OK to go in when the signs say otherwise? Your status may allow you entry to the cabin hallway, but those that aren't Diamond/Platinum/FTTF are instructed to stay out. Period. End of discussion. By all means - grasp the handles to your little heart's content. In fact, you are encouraged to do so being you earned that privilege.

Oh and BTW, the doors that I mentioned are NOT fire doors so let's just let that part go. And since this is a Carnival board (as you were so kind to point out), we know that the doors that Carnival closes ARE fire doors and therefore, will not be locked. However, that doesn't change the fact that they ask the guests that are uninvited at that point to respect the rules and keep out.

I let my 11 year old son read this entire thread with me and his comment just as he is heading off to bed is...

,,,....Dad, why can't people simple follow the rules, that is what we are taught in school......to follow the rules and if you break them, you get sent to the principal.

.....and there you have it!

Indeed!

You've got a good kid, there, esdoorn. But I'm sure you don't need us strangers on the internet to tell you that.;) You must be doing something right. It's heartening to know there are still other parents out there raising children to not be entitled, self-absorbed brats.:)

ETA: There I go with the slow typing again. While I was pecking this post out, hftmrock put it much more succinctly than I. But then, I've never been known for being succinct.:o

Please understand that if 3,000 people did this most would be getting their bags and unpacking at 9pm

OH NO!!!

Not the "What if everyone did it", argument

"Everyone", never does anything.

As if they were all getting onto the ship at one time anyway. The line is SO slow, that statement fails *EVERY* time. :p

ANd yet, horrors, it used to be done without incident. You checked in, you got your key, you boarded, and you went to the room.

Hard to do that as you cut back staff. And becomes OUR problem......NOT.

Imagine these guys having to turn over 35 rooms now instead of 20. Rooms will be available after dinner.

Why is it so important "to buck the system". If Carnival requests that you don't go to your room before 1:30 shouldn't we just follow their request, out of common courtesy? If someone carries on an excessive amount of stuff shouldn't they just plan on checking-in and boarding closer to 1:30...the buffet is still serving and people have the "whole trip" to peruse the ship.

I didn't have a problem with bucking the system until Carnival started charging for it.

I OTOH have been platinum since the early 00's, plus book suites, so it's non applicable to me since then started it. I'm usually first on board, checked into my room, eaten, and out at the pool before most people get to the pier.

Loyalty passengers have also "paid" for their privileges....why penalize a cruiser who doesn't, necessarily sail a single line from getting the opportunity, even if they have to pay extra for it, that is available. Your comment sounds a bit "self-centered" to me. No one guarantees any of us that life will be "fair". And, I can't really fathom that something like FTTF will really impact long time cruisers who choose a single cruise line. I've been on sailings where an exorbitant amount of passengers are platinum....their "perks" don't affect my enjoyment of the sailing.

Maybe Carnival could staff a lounge for people to check carry on until rooms are ready. NCL does this and I think it was a great idea.

Good for NCL. Since I'm not familiar with their product I have no idea how their check-in, boarding, or schedule works and what people are allowed to carry-on, or how they deal with entry into rooms. Is their "boarding" process a carbon copy of Carnival's with the exception of the "hat check" room?

I am glad you have asked more questions to learn about what a competitor does that Carnival could potentially adopt as an additional feature and benefit for guests.

They used one of the ships mid sized lounges near the boarding area and had two staff members at a table near the entrance. You could drop off carry ons for free and staff would tag them for you and give you a receipt. I believe the lounge was open from the start of boarding until 3:00PM.

As I said, perhaps Carnival could consider adopting a similar approach towards improving guest experience and helping to keep people from going to rooms before they are read. I hope this explanation has made you somewhat more familiar with the offering.

That's the problem with Carnival. Once the leader and innovators of mass cruising, they have fallen behind.

Problems that surface, like chair hogs a d embarkation/debarkation, even when people point out tried and true methods, they dismiss them as quick as they are ready, and even ridiculed. Yet the work.

Ever try to get on or off a Disney ship? Painless.

The chair hog timing of 10 minutes, that actually works on RCI? No, lets make it 40 minutes, and not track those that circumvent the process.

It seems that all their methods of control just stifle the ease of the passenger, as opposed to accommodating them. Even on something as simple as the basic need of life; water.

Every company does things slightly differently. The benefit of trying other companies is discovering new things you like; sometimes you discover things you do not like as much. It is important to take guest suggestions, especially when removed from the "echo chamber" of one experience over and over and over again to learn about things your guest would appreciate.

You said it well, they are stifling the ease of the guest and not accommodating them.

Our last 2 Cruises we did not have FTTF, But we did go ahead to cabin with our carry on's soda and small items. We found Stewart in hallway and asked..Both time they took items into cabin and no problems.

So what other rules in life do you not follow?

I think your examples are pretty generalized...chair hogs are alive and well on RCI. Doesn't Disney have reserved check-in times? Water is available on all ships...prices of bottled water (for those that think it is important to buy it) can be as much as $24 for a case. I've waited on RCI until 3 pm to gain room access and my luggage didn't show up until after dinner.

ALL cruiselines have issues and all cruiselines have different methods (rules) while on board the ship. Doesn't make one way better than another outside the "eye of the beholder".

  • 2 weeks later...
I guess I didn't realize how important you are and that you are soooooo far above all the rest of us that you can make your own rules. I hope I never get that important. I guess you have brothers such as paperbkwriter and others that travel with you huh?

A bit snarky... FYI I fly and usually don't board until well after 1 and like I said I'm platinum so this doesn't really effect me BUT I know what a pain it is to drag your carry on up to lunch before you can get in the cabin. (not platinum on any other lines)

Carry it around until approx. 1 pm when cabins are ready.

That is completely unreasonable for some people - I have a family with 2 small kids, including a stroller, pack n play (my kid wont sleep in a strange one) diaper bags etc.

So, we just do FTTF.

You're over-analyzing what the stewards think.

I remember clearly back to a cruise in the early 00's, when the only time we got "caught" was by a steward on the other side of the closed door, who escorted us to our room. And it turned out to be our actual steward. He told us he didn't care, that people all the time just dropped their bags and ran. It it didn't interrupt them at all. In fact, he said it actually spread out the time he needed to go down the check list with everybody, instead of the bottle neck at 1:30 and after.

"I Wish" everyone would follow the rules, it makes things much better. Then again some folks feel self entitled.

We have a carry-on with a 12 pack of soda and have always checked it with no problem.

Perhaps if it would have exploded all over your or others' clothes, you would feel differently. These are the rules directly from Carnival's website.

A small quantity of non-alcoholic beverages (i.e., sparkling water, sodas, juice, and milk) packaged in cans or cartons may be brought onboard on embarkation day and must be in the guest's carry-on luggage. A small quantity is considered a maximum of 12 sealed, unopened cans/cartons of 12 ounces each or less per person.
