Did your kids like the "family friendly" comedian?

The one time we took our kids to the family friendly comedy show, it just seemed like adult humor, minus profanity. The jokes weren't in poor taste, but they were definitely over my kid's heads. Is this the norm? Just wondering if we had a dud comic, or if that's what is expected at a "family friendly" comedy show.

From what I've experienced..that tends to be pretty standard. The jokes are often over the kids' heads...my son laughs anyway because that's what he sees everybody else doing and assumes he's supposed to do. He's on the autism spectrum (Asperger's) and usually uses what other people are doing in these kinds of situations to determine what HE'S supposed to do.

I guess they usually do go over their heads a little...I think I can remember a couple of them with jokes about family situations or something, can't exactly recall though....

how about "so kids, how about that cefeteria food amiright?

That doesn't seem like that would be very funny. You gotta remember some people who go on cruises don't have kids lol.

I went to one of the family friendly shows once. No profanity or anything offensive , but the guy just wasn't funny. I think he was trying to be so clean that he forgot to be funny.

A lot of his routine was how the kids today have all this cool stuff compared to what he had as a kid.

It started sounding like a " In my day we walked 10 miles to school up hill each way" lecture that your grandparents gave you .

Oddly enough he was pretty funny at the adult show and he really wasn't that "adult" as some comics are

Depends on the Comedian. Some add profanity to a family show to make it adult. Others just eliminate profanity for a 'family friendly' show. Those are like Bugs Bunny. Funny for kids, whole different meaning for adults.

It really does depend on the comedian. But, yes, in general, my kids enjoy the Family Friendly Comedy Shows. And when the comedian is good, it's one of their favourite parts of the cruise.

Last cruise with the kids, our oldest DD (10) convinced us to sit front-and-center, in the "you're going to get picked on by the comedian" seats, after seeing it happen to another family the previous night. We humoured her and sat there, sure enough, the comedian picked on her (and us), she took it like a great sport, and fun was had by all.:p

Some comedians, PG- or R-rated are duds, some just don't seem to know how to be funny and clean at the same time, some confuse vulgarity with humour, and some - the really talented comedians, can adjust their material to their audience and be really funny doing anything from G- to R-rated.

Only been on 1 cruise with the kids and my 12 year old son loved them. I'm sure he didn't get some of the jokes but he couldn't wait to finish dinner and get down to the show. Of the 3 we saw, 1 was really good, 1 was average and 1 wasn't that good.

*LOL* Those Bugs Bunny?/ Warner Bros. cartoons definately had a few underlying adult themes in some of them you didn't catch as a kid on Saturday mornings . :)

Mind you they were 30 years old when I first started watching them so some of the Hollywood /WWII references were lost on me. But they were still funny

Unfortunately once when we went, it was not family friendly and we had to leave. The other time our child went to sleep.

I think you are right. My teenage kids like the fa,ily comedy but not sure how if preteens would get as much out of it. As much as I like the comedy, which is a lot, I'm not sure it's all that great fun r the family shows.

:D

I work as a "Child Nutrition Specialist" (aka Lunch Lady) for our district. Yeah..our food's not always the greatest and the other day we had a meeting about "Smart Snacks" which technically is anything we DO NOT count as part of the lunch (chips, cookies, fruit roll ups, ice cream, etc).

Some of our food is really REALLY good (the Mandarin Chicken is a favorite of mine) and some of it has really REALLY bombed (Teriyaki Beef with Rice).

We started taking DS to the family shows 2 years ago when he was 11, on the last 4 cruises he has loved the family friendly comedians. He now looks forward to that activity each cruise, we are on the Magic this December and he is already trying to find out which comedians will be booked.

I think as he gets older he understands the humor more and more so finds it enjoyable. Plus going to a comedy club is not something we would normally think to do as a family and is more of a grown up thing to do for him, he loves it!

We went to a"family friendly" show a few cruises ago. I think the comedian was named Miss Thea or something similar. There were a couple of families seated in front at the tables. She started her routine with a couple of jokes, she then went on to "engage" the children seated in front. She wasn't particularly funny and her routine degraded into poking fun of the children. Not in a funny way either. More in a bullying manor. I felt a bit uncomfortable with the show when the kids started crying because of the verbal dressing down by the comedian.

Not funny to watch and certainly not "Family Friendly" for the kids that came expecting a fun show, only to leave in tears because of verbal abuse.

Yikes! That's awful. I hope the appropriate complaints were made and that woman never gets another job on a family cruise line.

ETA: Heck, I would have gone to GS and complained about that just as a witness. And as the parent of the children attacked, I would have been livid!

Holy crap! I'm not one to call for someone's job, but making fun of kids... She obviously was not experienced in kid friendly comedy. Poor kids. I'm surprised no one stood up to leave or say anything. I sure would have if it were my child. Talk about a show stopper!

The rest of the cruise people would be saying, "there's the woman that bitch-slapped the comedian!"

Having seen Miss Thea on a cruise (this was last Spring Break, I believe)...I am not surprised. She wasn't funny at all and I remember saying to my husband after one of the family friendly shows (did NOT attend her adult shows) that she was one of the worst comedians I've ever seen.

I think..again..JMO..that old age and illness has caught up with her and made it more difficult for her to be a comedian. I seem to remember (aided by IMDB) she used to be quite funny and attractive but not so much anymore as she's aged. :(

Years ago my young teen daughter was picked on. She had left to go to the restroom. Just as she was returning the comedian asked me her name. Stupidly, I told him. He had the whole audience stand up and call out her name and then he made some crude comments about where she had been. She literally sank almost to the floor when she resumed her seat. We were sitting very close to him and to make matters even worse, when the show was over, he told her I had put him up to doing that to her. Well, I won't continue with what happened after that!! I must say I really lost it!!

Ironic, I was just on another thread and I posted to you that you are so funny. Take that with a grain of salt, I have been told I have no sense of humor. I reply, no, I just only recognize really good humor!!:D

I clicked on that link to IMDB and I do remember her in her stand up days. She actually was very funny . I remember her on the talk show circuits.

When our boys were 15 and 10, they had a great time with the comedian on the paradise. We sat in the front of the room and the comedian interacted with them quite a bit. The comedy club was about the only place they wanted to join the family ;)
