VAT Tax on Vista Questions

My question is this......Leaving on the Carnival Vista and Izmir Turkey port was canceled.......Embarking port is Barcelona....Debarking is Athens.....So with Turkey canceled there's No Non EU ports

If I Prepurchase Excursions will I still be hit with the VAT tax during the cruise for them?? Or is VAT more for just tangible items?

How about per drink prices? We're not buying the cheers pkg as we have the free drink cards in the casino but was reading about a additional 18-21% added per drink

I read even the Internet pkg can have VAT added.....Is this correct?

Need info from anyone that knows how this VAT works when there's no Non EU ports

Thanks for any help

VAT can only be added to things you buy IN Europe. As such, anything prepurchased can not have VAT added.

Since you are departing from Barcelona, Spain's VAT laws were prevail throughout the cruise which means 10% on bar and food and 21% on store purchases (tangible items). The tangible items can be recouped if you spend enough. I don't recall the exact amount but its like $130 at a time to be eligible. In all of my travels, I've never attempted to get my VAT back.

I've purchased excursions for our cruise and have not been charged a VAT tax. Believe you'll see this once you land in Europe and attempt to buy anything. VAT tax in Europe is 25% in most or all places if I remember correctly.

No one else pays the VAT this summer except May 24 cruise?

Is this fair?

ALL will be paying the Vat tax that aren't going to Izmir. I'm on Oct 1st and while the ports listed still it'll be taken off most likely

I am totally confused - we are on July 9th cruise and last week the Izmir tours had been taken off although we had not been informed if the port had been cancelled. I just checked today and the tours are back listed !! SO WHO KNOWS!

So on top of a quoted price, they will add gratuities AND tax?

Why not just be honest and upfront about the prices you pay?

BTW. Claiming tax back only applies if you are not a EU resident doesn't it?

You remember incorrectly. VAT has various levels - and some items zero rated. Each country has its own separate rates, however the disembarkation point dictates the percentage.

I find this whole thing completely dishonest. I know the ship was expensive and they are in the business to make money, but adding 15% gratuities for items (because they don't pay their staff enough) and another 21% (which should already be included in any price shown if the wish to comply with EU regulations) is disgraceful.

No wonder people smuggled drinks onboard. If I agree to buy something, I expect to see what it's going to cost me. I then make an informed decision on if I will pay what's asked. Not keep adding things over and above the quoted price.

This is not a good situation.

Summer cruises not stopping at a non EU port are needlessly taxed at over 20%.

We were never told this when booking.

Because Izmir was on the itinerary when you booked. That is the only port that was not EU.

I'm assuming the transatlantic cruise will not have VAT added to any item on the ship, would this be a correct assumption?

Or are we likely to have VAT added for the early part of the cruise?

No VAT on the TA....since I'm on the last 2 Meds and the TA, if they cancel Izmir on the Meds, I will wait to purchase store items on the TA.

What difference does that make? It's irrelevant. Has a Nigerian Prince bought Carnival?

:confused::confused:

This tax doesn't go to Carnival. It will lower the amount of sales on Carnival cruises that have to collect the tax.

You have it completely backwards. This hurts Carnival overall more than any individual.
