olegna Posted May 7, 2016 #1 Share Posted May 7, 2016 (edited) Watching the GEM leave NYC http://portnywebcam.com/ http://portnywebcam.com/ Seems a tug provided maneuvering assistance. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B15C_5NRfxZRRTN5WVVmY0x0QW8/view?usp=sharing Edited May 7, 2016 by olegna
Barb Nahoumi Posted May 7, 2016 #2 Share Posted May 7, 2016 I was watching that as well. Two tugs seem to be assisting her, as she's standing still in the Hudson.

In order to conduct maintenance to Norwegian Gem's Azipod propulsion system, the ship will proceed directly to Nassau after our call in Port Canaveral. We will arrive in Nassau on Tuesday at Noon and remain overnight, departing late Wednesday evening once the maintenance is completed. We regret to inform you that the ship will not be able to call on Great Stirrup Cay with the revised schedule. We apologize for this change and would like to thank you for your patience and understanding.

ColinIllinois Posted May 7, 2016 #7 Share Posted May 7, 2016 Man, missing GSC and then having to stay in Nassau overnight? Yuck. That itinerary was bad to start with.

Tangocherie Posted May 7, 2016 #9 Share Posted May 7, 2016 I can't see any smoke coming out of the smokestack. She seems to be dead in the water. Wish I could hear the radio exchanges between the Cost Guard and the ship.

meatball_nyc Posted May 7, 2016 #11 Share Posted May 7, 2016 Whales only like Breakaway. Seriously, I hope they can fix it soon. She's barely moving. That sucks. Safe Sailing!
Barb Nahoumi Posted May 7, 2016 #12 Share Posted May 7, 2016 She seems to be slowly underway now. I hope that the passengers and crew have a safe cruise.

Rare mking8288 Posted May 7, 2016 #16 Share Posted May 7, 2016 (edited) Fog/mist in NY harbor, listen in on marine radio traffic - she's heading out toward the VZB, passed SOL in, cleared for out to sea - doing about 16 knots now from 12 knots down the Hudson, thanking the escorts via VHF radio. Azipod issues likely only challenged the ship's precision steering while doing tight turns & sideways, etc. ... more reasons for skipping GSC to do some maintenance at Nassau. Harbor's maritime traffic very busy today - events/training this morning, something about America's Cup with sailboats. Go to NY Harbor's live webcam & she should be in sights any moment - 2 fast small boat just went across camera view, possibly NYPD (difficult to tell) P.S. Already gone beyond VZB @ 5:05 PM EDT & speed up to 18 knots, she's looking fine. Smooth & safe sailing for those onboard. prg2101 Posted May 7, 2016 #17 Share Posted May 7, 2016 I'm in NY right now in a hotel down by battery park for our breakaway sailing tomorrow and saw the Gem creep down the Hudson...there was a lot of traffic on the Hudson earlier because of the Americas Cup and I think that is why the ship needed the tugs...at no point did it appear that the ship was powerless:)

MICHLEV1974 Posted May 10, 2016 #19 Share Posted May 10, 2016 I spoke to my friend, who is a crew members on the ship, that they will miss GSC this week and will dock in the Bahamas overnight - this is where they are making the final repairs to the propeller. I would be so bummed missing GSC too.
Letsgo 2 Posted May 10, 2016 #20 Share Posted May 10, 2016 The only reason the Gem needed help getting out of the Dock, was because the Azipods need to be repaired, without them the ship can not turn sideways, that's were the Tug Boats come into play to help to help with backing out and turning into the River. The reason it slowed down so much and seemed like it was not moving was only to wait for the American Cup Races to finish and for Boat Traffic to ease up on the River. There was nothing else wrong with the Gem, Marion
