floridalover5623 Posted June 21, 2016 #1 Share Posted June 21, 2016 Has anyone found an app that adds an alert to the text message for the Princess@sea app ? It's sort of limited unless you want to keep checking the phone all day long.
cherylandtk Posted June 21, 2016 #2 Share Posted June 21, 2016 Not yet. The Princess one does not alert, and the third party app does not work.
floridalover5623 Posted June 21, 2016 Author #3 Share Posted June 21, 2016 Not yet. The Princess one does not alert, and the third party app does not work. I found two apps that I though might work but sooner or later someone will develop one that will give some indication. Even if it were limited to a vibration without any audio it would be great so as to not disturb others. I only wish I had the knowledge to do it myself. ;)
Potstech Posted June 21, 2016 #4 Share Posted June 21, 2016 Apparently Princess has no desire for this app to alert people when they have a message. They have been told numerous times since they implemented it and this has not been resolved. Sorry but Princess does not want to make that feature available for some unknown reason. Makes messaging feature basically useless.
paul929207 Posted June 21, 2016 #5 Share Posted June 21, 2016 Personally, I would not mind a vibration, but an audio alert would be awful in the theater and at other shows.

Makes messaging feature basically useless. It's more of an annoucement app than a messenger app. Our family found it quite useful. Not for having a two way conversation, but to simply let others know our intentions. If your trying to keep dibs on others it not useful for that. I was just wondering if someone had come up with a way of getting around the silent feature. If not, it doesn't seem worth carrying the thing all day just to read the Patter. Makes messaging feature basically useless. I don't know that they don't want to...like in their hearts. Probably more like they don't want to tinker with a package they are using. Lots of the princess stuff, including messaging is based on Drupal. The Drupal messaging has notifications, using Google Cloud Messaging. Unfortunately, Princess blocks GCM. I wrote an app to make notifications. I had it make a notification for pending message, and a notification for lost wifi coverage. After 1 billion 'lost wifi' notifications on Regal, I gave up. Pam in CA Posted June 22, 2016 #9 Share Posted June 22, 2016 There's a terrific CC thread on traveling with an iPhone and iPad with app suggestions and experiences. Worth a read. :) Traveling with an iPhone or iPad https://r.tapatalk.com/shareLink?url=http%3A%2F%2Fboards%2Ecruisecritic%2Ecom%2Fshowthread%2Ephp%3Ft%3D1628929&share_tid=1628929&share_fid=24703&share_type=t

Even if there was some way of notification such as vibrating, it would still really be annoying to have the bright screens suddenly appear randomly around the darkened theater as passengers looked at the messages and responded to them. Posts like this make me want to re-double my efforts to make notifications work. This can be done pretty easily with a browser extension, the problem is finding a mobile browser that handes custom extensions. Cruise Critic members seem to have an attitude that others may only do things of which they personally approve. So your solution is to have the inconsiderate folks open their phones and show you a bright screen to check for message every 2-3 minutes? I think there are plenty more people interested/checking on messages than there are people actually receiving them. So, in my opinion, your cure is worse than the disease. Regardless, princess set up this system. They certainly expect people to send and receive messages, even if you do not.

So now if they are expecting a message from someone they turn their phones on and go to the app every 5 minutes or so to check their messages. So what would be the difference. Have seen it in the theaters on my last two cruises.
Kenswing Posted June 22, 2016 #16 Share Posted June 22, 2016 App or no app there are plenty of rude people on cruises who can't seem to live without doing something with their phone/iPad/Kindle during the shows..

No one does. Just give people a simple vibration alert on princess. When a courteous person receives it, they will know and it will not disturb anyone. You seem to think you can somehow manage the actions of discourteous people. My experience has been that that is not possible. What about people holding up their tablet to shoot photo's? Maybe even more annoying.
