They're really not any more annoying than someone constantly gabbing on their cell phone

 

Which is no more annoying than having more than one human nearby, having a chat.

 

The only difference is that the listener doesn't get to hear both sides of the story. So I believe the TRUE irritation to the listener is that we are nosy but are thwarted with cellphones.

 

 

Anyway, I'd put the walkies in carryon.

 

 

We finally saw walkies in action on Freedom in March, and they were working in the elevator. It was pretty spectacular, actually. Crystal clear, too. And not in the least bit irritating; ended up being just like if the girls' dad was in the elevator with them telling them of a change of plans.

We have used walkie talkies many many times on cruises. They are great onboard and off the ship. Pick a channel that everyone in your group will monitor, that cuts down on chatter. Carry them in your carry on so you can have access when you board before your luggage is delivered.

Just be careful if you are using them off the ship as they are illegal in many ports. The local police use the same channels and you can be fined or worse if you do use them there.

All I have to say about walkie talkies on a cruise is, "please don't."

 

I've seen pax use walkie talkies on ships and it's never bothered me. Quite the opposite, I think it's sort of neat....though it is somewhat rare in my experience. I've also seen all sorts of ship personnel use them. They are not banned, so feel free to take them if you wish.

 

I guess most people that oppose it are concerned that everyone will start to do it...but that seems unlikely. Frankly, I would expect the younger users to use it sparsely once the novelty of having it wears off. Besides that, today's youth are accustomed to having cell phones, so I would think they may use it even less (than 10 years ago) because they won't want to share their conversation with the whole world.
