Vampire Parrot Posted September 8, 2016 #51 Share Posted September 8, 2016 That's a very nice and totally safe flypast. I can't see what the fuss is all about! VP
herbanrenewal Posted September 9, 2016 #52 Share Posted September 9, 2016 September 11, 2014 we sailed on Grandeur of the Seas from Baltimore, As part of the 200th anniversary of the writing of the Star Spangled Banner the Blue Angels air show flew over Fort McHenry, and our cruise had ring-side seats for the whole thing as the maneuvers occurred over head. Talk about a thrilling show!!!
TruckerDave Posted September 9, 2016 #53 Share Posted September 9, 2016 (edited) I live under the flight path for JRB Carswell which is shared with Lockheed. We get F-35s flying over regularly which will have an F-16 as an escort. That and there is an air force reserve unit that flies F-16s and a Navy/Marine unit with F-18s. We used to get B-52s and KC-135s all day as well but those are long gone. Anyway on topic sailing into Key West was awesome. There was a bi-plane circling the ship several miles out and then the Sun Downer Squadron from NAS Key West started flying around us. They do adversary training for the Navy/Marines and fly F-5s painted in hostile nation colors. So you'd see an Iranian flagged jet being chased by a USN F-18. It was pretty cool. I live under the flight path for Charleston AFB (or Joint base Charleston as they call it) and the free air shows are great. I get F-16's all the time (they are the only ones I even hear any more as they are LOUD). The C-17 cargo planes are pretty cool and the occasional C5 Galaxy (when they stop in and load cargo or drop some off). Plus I get to see all the new Boeing 787's. The best one is the huge 747 cargo planes Boeing uses to transport whole plane sections. Plus all the usual commercial planes (The AF, Boeing and the regular airport all share the same place/runways. The B-52's are actually not that far away from you (some of them anyway) they are bases over in Shreveport. (as well as up in SD i think) I see them all the time when driving trough Shreveport. Pretty cool sight to see then flying around after all these years. :D Edited September 9, 2016 by TruckerDave
Pudgesmom Posted September 9, 2016 #54 Share Posted September 9, 2016 Maverick: Tower, this is Ghost Rider requesting a flyby. Air Boss Johnson: Negative, Ghost Rider, the pattern is full. :)
donaldsc Posted September 9, 2016 #55 Share Posted September 9, 2016 They can't. I knew that. It was obvious that the FAA couldn't do that. However, the respondent who posted that suggestion was apparently unaware that the FAA does not have authority of foreign military aircraft. I would guess that even in the US, the FAA does not have authority over military aircraft. They can perhaps file a complaint with the military but they probably have no direct authority over the military. Do you remember way back when military jets would drop into the Grand Canyon and fly really low over the Colorado River. DON
Elaine5715 Posted September 9, 2016 #56 Share Posted September 9, 2016 Me too... Me, three... I also think it is way cool when the Coast Guard choppers do a Miami Vice fly-by while in Miami..

donaldsc Posted September 10, 2016 #59 Share Posted September 10, 2016 (edited) I live near a range and I see all kinds of military aircraft. I think my favorite of all time is the A-10. The A-10 pilot is insane, by the way. He has to be to fly like that! I live not too far from Nellis Air force Base in Vegas. When they are doing their Red Flag exercise, it is wild. I was at Ellsworth Air Force Base where I was taking a tour and I heard a roar and we saw a B1 Lancer bomber taking off. Talk about intense. Jackytar Posted September 18, 2016 #60 Share Posted September 18, 2016 So summary: OP posted an OMG***BBQ about a plane flying 'dangerously' close to a ship, and it turns out to have been nothing of the sort. Other posters here apparently think the FAA has the jurisdiction to pull the license of every pilot in the world, military and otherwise. Most people seem to feel a flyby from a US/Cdn/Brit/other allied nation fighter would be pretty cool. Sounds like a normal day on CC. :)
