Cabin Selection

How do you choose? I've read don't be under the galley or theater. Or don't be above a bar or something else. Front, middle, back?

How do I know if I'm choosing a crappy cabin? What difference does it make if you are on one side or front to back?

Cove balconies look like caves but people seem to love them. Is a regular balcony open all the way down? Is there just a railing between me and the next door cabin or is there also a wall/door between us?

Help?

I always do a Lido deck balcony cabin. Food, movies, ice cream and pizza all on the same deck.

Go to YouTube and you'll see the size of the average balcony. Note that the top most level of balconies have open sky with no overhang. There is a wall between cabins on the same deck.

Search your ships deck plans. If there are cabins above and below you that is fine. If there are casinos , bars, and lounges I would think twice about getting. Also by the elevators are high traffic areas. They say get mid ship for less vibration and movement. Aft has vibration from motor, and front has more movement possibly from breaking waves. Somethings bother some people more than others. It is a personal decision and you find out real fast what you like thru experience. Good Luck

We always choose deck 7. Been aft, mid and forward and have never been disappointed with noise, etc. Two decks from lido. Two decks from promenade. At this point, it may be more inertia, but as long as we don't have issue, we will stick with it.

Us, too! Lido balcony, mid ship. Just steps from Lido bars, food, etc... And we can work off all that "extra" by taking the stairs to other decks. And if we do choose to use elevators, they are close. Only noise I have ever noticed is if on the balcony and hear music from Lido. And I enjoyed it. Have never had a motion problem. I think it sometimes just boils down to how much you want to spend. Lido is usually more. As some say, any cruise is better than none, so however you go, have a great time!!:)

Have had good luck with Deck 7 as well.

Now, then, I'll tell you about the two bad experiences I had with cabin selection. First, we had a corner aft cabin (not sure the deck), and we must have been right above the screws on the Conquest. Grrr. Lots of vibration and noise.

The other time was a mid deck level 9 on the Magic. Holy hell, I think it must have been right under the pool area because from about 10:00PM until midnight they must have had a line dancing contest or something right above our heads. Lots of stomping, scooting, and clogging. Completely ridiculous and VERY loud. Swore to always have at least a deck of rooms above and below us on future cruises.

The rest of the nondescript middle of the ship decks sandwiched between other decks full of rooms were great. Try to get one of those.

If I were new to cruising, I would be looking at the deck plans for the ship I was planning to book a cruise on as a starter. For sure you might want to avoid the deck just below the Lido deck or whichever deck has the buffet on it. I would also notice the location of any bars and/or nightclubs and consider that they will be jamming late and will attract lots of traffic. Traffic going to them is not so bad, but after a little partying, coming back might be a little more...uh...boisterous! I would also avoid decks above and below the casino as it is open very late and is quite noisy, generally.

Once again, personal preference plays a big role in where you want to be. I have trouble seeing or walking before coffee in the morning, so Lido deck is my preference! Some folks want to be near the main atrium or the casino or some other public area on the ship so they may choose a cabin that would not suit you. My advice is to consult with your PVP or TA and ask them for advice based on what your personal preference is. But, have a deck plan handy so you can validate that they are putting you in a place you will be happy with.

We prefer Lido or Panorama (one up from Lido). Doesn't matter if its interior or balcony -- we actually alternate because hubby likes an interior for sleeping. Hallways on Lido are usually quiet because it is shorter, so not as much traffic. And we always seem to book starboard (odd number cabins) because when my I started cruising 24 years ago, we were assigned an odd number cabin and I've just kept doing it out of habit. It's easier for hubby to remember, I think.

We have had a Cove cabin once. It was nice, but far away from everything. I have severe arthritis and can't do stairs well, so waiting on an elevator is something I prefer not to do.

We always choose a balcony cabin on the Panorama Deck. Once deck above the Lido. Still close to most of the action and just a quick trip back to your cabin if you need something or want to use your own bathroom on sea days. We usually pick a cabin close to the elevators and have never heard any noise from them because there are fewer people on that and the Lido Deck. Brother and SIL book a cabin next to us and we always have the divider opened up to make a larger balcony. (You have to be careful when booking adjoining cabins to make sure they will open the divider. If it will block the door on one cabin, they won't open it.)

Like everyone else says it's what u prefer. I like the spa rooms. I had the aft room before and didn't like the noise from the back of the ship. Mid area works well u are near most stuff on lido deck. I like balcony rooms more because I like to go outside my room. It depends on price . I usually pick a room near a elevator because I can't walk far. The only room I dislike was the aft room and that was because ship woke us up going into port each time and divers were small. U can see over ur neighbor balcony.

Also, keep in mind, if anyone is prone to sea sickness, mid ship, lower deck is the best as far as movement goes.

Price will be a factor also, depending on where you choose to be.

As another poster advised, study the deck plans of the ship you are considering and make sure you have cabins above and below, noise will not be an issue then.

Practical things---

Look at a deck plan, lining up the staircases/elevators. Look to see where the public and crew areas are.

No issue for us being under the Shore Excursion desk or MDR. We avoid being under the galley or much of the Lido deck.

Midship, Empress deck 7, port side balcony or suite...once you have cruised a few times and know your needs (ie: if someone has issue with motion sickness you want Midship mostly) and wants, then it is easy.

We use Empress deck cuz we want cabins below and above as well as its pretty much mid way up and mid way down on most ships, we always use stairs and that is a good starting deck.

Some questions to ask yourself.

Do you get sea sick? - If yes, most people recommend a low deck, mid ship.

Are you a light sleeper? - If yes, avoid cabins above or below the areas indicated in your question. Try to aim to have a cabin above, below and on each side. Also the very front and very back of the ship get less foot traffic. Also avoid cabins near the elevators as they get the dinging plus extra foot traffic.

Are you relatively healthy with no mobility issues? - If yes, distance to and from stuff won't be an issue. IF NO, think about the spaces you will be using the most and book a cabin closer to those. For example if you will be using the casino a bunch choose a cabin if not directly above or below than at the same end of the ship so you won't have to walk the whole distance of the ship to get there.

With regards to the side of the ship your cabin is on... If you are on an itinerary very heavy with scenery (Alaska) than yes, the side of the ship might matter a great deal. In my (albeit limited experience) it doesn't matter much in the Caribbean. There is something interesting to see from all sides when in port.

Are you sun people? - If yes, Cove balconies might not be the best choice. IF NO, avoid aft balconies, as they tend to be sunnier.

Now after answering all the above you might find yourself looking for the impossible non-existent cabin. Prioritize your needs. For example Sea-sick (low cabin) vs. Access to pools (high cabin) and you'll have a better idea.

Good luck, and keep asking questions!

This is an excellent question. We don't usually choose our cabins because we take the less expensive guaranteed cabin. Once we were under a deck where they were dragging chairs all over our ceiling. Once we were under the pools and when they did a conga dance, it was like a herd of elephants stomping over your ceiling.

This time we got to choose our cabins between two decks of cabins. We are Main Deck between deck 4 and deck 6. I hope this works out.

Glad you posted. I have always wondered about, how it would be to book, without knowing where your cabin will be. I am such a plan and research, every little step person, I would go nuts not knowing where I would be on the ship. So, am curious, as to, how soon before you cruise, that you actually know where your cabin will be? I have received a lot of "soon to sail, we will pick your cabin" offers, or how ever they word it. Big savings, but SCARED!!:D

I did not know my cabin # until I was on line at the pier. Sometimes we booked 2 or 3 cabins and we were always on the same deck. This time we did pick our cabins before we sailed. It is a gamble and I read that you can luck out and get a high up cabin, worth more than what you pay. However, I may not go back to the guaranteed cabin. I believe you get leftover cabins that no one will buy!
