dodger1964 Posted July 20, 2016 #26 Share Posted July 20, 2016 Thanks for doing review. We leave in 3 days for Budapest...doing 4 days pre-cruise in Budapest, then cruising to Nuremberg. Love your pics.
Rare Got2Cruise Posted July 20, 2016 Author #27 Share Posted July 20, 2016 The pics don't give the sights you will see justice. Soak everything up and enjoy. Such beautiful craftsmanship and artistry everywhere you turn. Plus the fresh air and landscape of the alps and the Danube valley
Rare Got2Cruise Posted July 21, 2016 Author #28 Share Posted July 21, 2016 (edited) Day 7 - Passau, Bavaria. I loved the tour here. The guides wear period costumes and talk in character. Also, members of the group are used to play historical figures. Very informative yet entertaining. In the photo with the flood lines you can see me standing and then look how much higher the flood went. The 2013 flood was 2nd highest. Rare Got2Cruise Posted July 21, 2016 Author #30 Share Posted July 21, 2016 After the morning in Passau, our ship sails upriver to the last stop Vilshofen. It's a cute little town. Evidently Ama Waterways has a special relationship with this town. We were going on to Munich post cruise. If you wanted some authentic German beer and food there were several cafes. It was very hot the day we arrived, so after a short stroll through the town, we walked along the Danube to the smalł beach. Yes, hubby took a dip. Rare Got2Cruise Posted August 3, 2016 Author #31 Share Posted August 3, 2016 The cruise extension to either Munich or Prague stops in Regensberg along the way. Folks going to Munich get more time to spend there. We ran into lots of folks from the ship at the Sausage Kitchen. Yummy! Regensberg was part of the Salt Road and a very important trading city. The guide gave an interesting tour based upon the Salt Road. Sent from my iPad using Forums
Rare Got2Cruise Posted August 3, 2016 Author #32 Share Posted August 3, 2016 We loved Munich! I have to say if you don't enjoy beer, pretzels, and German food you might not appreciate Munich. After checking into our Ama hotel, LeMeridien, we had the afternoon free to do as we pleased. Our goal was to eat at the Augustiner Biergarten because we found out that Augustiner was the oldest and best brewery in Munich. It was drizzling so we couldn't sit out back outside under the trees. Rare Got2Cruise Posted August 3, 2016 Author #33 Share Posted August 3, 2016 (edited) The next day we met for a guided tour of Munich. The first part was on the bus and we went all over. The guide was very knowledgable and interesting. We really didn't take many pictures through the glass windows of the bus, but we did get to see the BMW factory, Olympic Park, the University Quarter, N a z i Headquarters, and learned interesting information concerning each. Then it was on to a walking tour of old town ending at the glockenspiel at noon to watch. We left the tour then to go out on our own. First stop, lunch at the Hoftbrauhaus. Find a seat and sit down. We found two seats right next to the band. Sent from my iPad using Forums Edited August 3, 2016 by Got2Cruise

Rare Got2Cruise Posted August 3, 2016 Author #36 Share Posted August 3, 2016 There is always roast chicken offered at the biergartens. I ordered that once. And the pretzels are gigantic.

Rare Got2Cruise Posted August 3, 2016 Author #38 Share Posted August 3, 2016 Germany is the home of the Reformation -- sounds like time for a religious conversion for you (to meatatarianism :D) If you take this cruise you will learn that a) Bavarians don't like to call themselves German and b) Bavaria is 90 % Catholic. (There's more to the story you'll need to take the cruise and find out) [emoji3] One of our guides made the remark that Bavarians are only German during the weeks of the World Cup. Rare Got2Cruise Posted August 9, 2016 Author #40 Share Posted August 9, 2016 After the guided tour, we walked to the Residenz Museum. All the feedback from CC posters was very favorable. Plus, I love seeing how royalty lived. There is a free audio guide that is included in the admission. It was very well presented. Rare Got2Cruise Posted August 9, 2016 Author #41 Share Posted August 9, 2016 We also purchased tickets to the treasury , where the Crown Jewels were displayed. Evidently the family had taken the valuable stones out and sold them. The stones you see are replicas. Still very impressive. terpshockey77 Posted August 10, 2016 #42 Share Posted August 10, 2016 Thanks for your pictures and for the small tidbit that roast chicken is served at biergartens. Looking forward to visiting Bavaria and not sure what I can eat as sausage is not high on my list but know we will hit plenty of biergartens. We plan to visit Munich, Salzburg and board an Avalon river cruise in Passau.

Rare jpalbny Posted August 11, 2016 #44 Share Posted August 11, 2016 The Residenz is quite impressive. Is the treasury that you posted the pictures from the one that's right at the Residenz? We buzzed through there pretty quickly. Don't remember much of it.

Rare Got2Cruise Posted August 13, 2016 Author #46 Share Posted August 13, 2016 (edited) Neuschwanstein Castle exceeded my expectations. I knew ama would provide an excellent tour and they didn't disappoint. This was one of the reasons I went with the post extension tour and not diy. The guide Elsie was awesome. She spent her childhood in NJ so she spoke perfect English and understood Americans very well. After the tour she stayed at the hotel to help us print the boarding passes. ]http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160813/ee4e0d70344e3feb9722620558f6ab70_thumb.jpg[/img] Sent from my iPad using Forums Edited August 13, 2016 by Got2Cruise

Rare Got2Cruise Posted August 13, 2016 Author #48 Share Posted August 13, 2016 So I think you all get the general idea of the experiences along the Danube from Budapest with a Munich extension. It was a gorgeous experience. I tried to give everyone just a taste. Sent from my iPad using Forums
