ang293 Posted July 23, 2016 #1 Share Posted July 23, 2016 Hi Has anyone been to the Naples archeological museum? Just wondering how much time it needs to give it a decent go? Also has anyone done a DIY on the train from Salerno to Naples to Pompeii and back to Salerno? The train timetables look viable but just after any advice or gotchas Thanks
Gracie115 Posted July 23, 2016 #2 Share Posted July 23, 2016 HiHas anyone been to the Naples archeological museum? Just wondering how much time it needs to give it a decent go? Also has anyone done a DIY on the train from Salerno to Naples to Pompeii and back to Salerno? The train timetables look viable but just after any advice or gotchas Thanks Can't help with the train questions but the museum is one of our best memories from our Med cruise in 2012. It is a marvelous building and we were so glad we spent the afternoon there during our port stop in Naples. We had about 2 1/2 hours there which we thought was enough, although we did rush through a few rooms. The building alone is worth seeing but combined with all the exhibits...just a wonderful experience. Enjoy!:)
euro cruiser Posted July 23, 2016 #3 Share Posted July 23, 2016 (edited) The trains are quite easy to use. Both the museum and Pompei in the same day from Salerno will be a push, however. To get to the museum, at Napoli Centrale switch to the #1 metro line and ride for five stops to museo and you're there. Note that the Trenitalia train station in Pompei is a half mile from the Anfiteatro entrance/exit and a little over a mile from the Porta Marina entrance. What you could do is go to the museum in the morning, if you decide there is sufficient time to stop at Pompei on the way back to Salerno, use the Circumvesuviana Naples-Sorrento line to Pompei Scavi. This stop is just outside the Porta Marina entrance/exit. Visit the ruins in one direction, ending at the Anfiteatro entance/exit, which puts you closer to the Trenitalia station you need to get back to Salerno. MeHeartCruising Posted July 23, 2016 #4 Share Posted July 23, 2016 (edited) I spent 2.5 to 3 hours in the museum, I think. It is well worth the visit. My stop in Naples that visit was a rainy day and the museum was a perfect fit. Edited July 23, 2016 by MeHeartCruising
dogs4fun Posted July 23, 2016 #5 Share Posted July 23, 2016 (edited) I love the Naples National Archaeology Museum and have visited multiple times - magnificent collection! On our most recent visit (last fall), we spent 3 hours. I believe I could happily spend an entire day there but, alas, other activities always beckon. :) Edited July 23, 2016 by dogs4fun
ang293 Posted July 24, 2016 Author #6 Share Posted July 24, 2016 Thanks everyone. It's one of those days when it's going to be a bit of a mad rush so it's good to get some help round the timing. Euro cruiser - thanks for the details on the Pompeii gates relative to the train stations. That's very helpful

ang293 Posted July 30, 2016 Author #9 Share Posted July 30, 2016 Thanks Vickie and Fishin musician - unfortunately for us we dock in Salerno not Naples so we lose a lot of time taking the train :(
