Dress code

Not being offensive, just truthful. I cruise recently for the first time with P&O, never again. People need to get a balance view not one that fails gto recognise reality.

You obviously didn't like P&O, but there is no need to come on to the threads to make sweeping comments about formal night etc etc. We've been on RCI and, though we had a good time for 4 days in the late Autumn, we know that we would hate it with a passion in school holidays when the upper decks would be like an amusement park. As a result we don't go --- neither do we spend our time on the RCI threads telling people that their cruise line is rubbish because of the things we don't like and that don't suit us. If you don't like the number of formal nights then stick to a line where the dress code suits... there is plenty of choice.

Re soot - have had soot on both P&O and Celebrity. (Nothing major and we survived). The RCI sister ships to Britannia are well known for soot .... that's the reality of it and a balanced view.

P.S. We are not 'blind' P&O 'fans' as we have been with Celebrity a number of times and gave RCI a go. We are currently considering Oceania, Cunard or Azamara for the future if the price and itinerary are good, but at the moment it looks like it will be P&O or Celebrity for us.

People need to go with a cruise line that suits them. Its nothing to do with a balanced view. If you don't like P& O that's fine but don't come on insulting people who do.

I thought the soot problem on Britannia was only at the stern of the ship.

Thank you, at least you recognise Britannia has a serious problem with SOOT.

In fact it is really TAR, the residue of bunker fuel that they continue to use that is a danger to the health of everyone aboard. Check out Friends of the Earth website - P&O are at the top of the league of the ocean's polluters.

Thank you all for your help. I guess p&o is not everyone's cup of tea but we are hoping that we will enjoy it x

It's a fact that P&O isn't everyone's cup of tea but there are plenty of people who love it. Obviously you are looking forward to it and also want to make the most of the Formal nights and I'm sure you'll all enjoy yourselves. We've been on plenty of cruises and love the whole thing .. food, entertainment, a bit of sightseeing, socialising, dancing etc. We always find the staff lovely and very helpful and we think Britannia is an excellent ship. Of course some people don't agree but its down to personal opinion and you have to remember that generally more people complain than compliment.

I so like your reply. I have yet to understand at all why people who cruise on other lines feel they need to come over to the pando thread and just be downright rude, because we like something they don't.

As you say we don't go over to the American boards and insult them.

Oh dear and oh well. I will just stick with the big bad boys of the oceans...

Thank you. Have to say, it happens on the other threads as well.

The person who started all of this fuss has yet to reply to my post ...

Oh dear and oh well ;-)

You obviously have a 'thing' against P&O. Britannia is one of P&Os ships re the soot issue. There are lots of Solstice ships like the Celebrity Silhouette (3 times cruised) and the RCI sister ships to Britannia. I hope that you are going over to those threads and making your environmental point re the other cruise lines.

Anyway, feel like I am being drawn in to an argument so will back off now and think happy thoughts re our upcoming cruise.

To the OP - go and have a fab time in your formal gear ;)

To the OP - have a great time and make your cruise what you want it to be :):)

All the cruise lines use heavy bunker fuel, P&O is no exception, cuts cost and enables them to sell cheap cruises. QE2 was notorious for it, the difference then though was you just went down to the purser and complained and you got the blackened clothing laundered free. Try that on Britannia then laugh.

I have no idea which cruise lines you cruise with but you obviously do so because they provide a product you like.

I cruise with P&O because they provide a product I like including four formal nights during a fourteen night cruise.

I have never experienced a "Soot" problem on any of the P&O ships I have sailed aboard.

No one forces you to cruise on P&O, please feel free to take your cruise on any cruise line that meets your needs/requirements and happy cruising wherever you go.

Britannia is sister ship to both Royal and Regal Princess of Princess Cruise lines and both of these ships are known to have this problem, the second of the class was built with higher exhaust outlets and Britannia was built with two funnels in an attempt to cure the soot, therefore it is not caused by P&O using cheap fuel, on our cruise on Azura two years ago there was a team of outside contractors onboard cleaning out the ships fuel tanks prior to her returning to the UK and European Waters where she would be using ultra low sulphur fuel in order to meet EU and US new Fuel Standard Regulations.

I am afraid to ask any other questions!

Please do not be afraid to ask questions on here. The majority of us on here would love to help you. I always try and help people if I can.

You just have to ignore the posts from people with their own agenda, who if anyone asks anything about pando, will jump on it and try and say x/y/z is so much better try them.

It amazes me sometimes how some threads go down a path in completely the opposite direction!!!

I hope among the replies you found the answers to your smart casual eveningwear.

Enjoy the formal evenings. To see the majority of people making the effort to dress up really lifts the atmosphere I think....and give me the excuse to well I do need another dress!!!!

I did get my answer and I have to say I have always found your answers very helpful.

I just don't understand how a simple question can go so far off track.

We will enjoy as we will make the most of the experience. X

And then the P&O cult will leap in with "no they aren't, P&O are perfect".

I just don't understand how a simple question can go so far off track.

If you want to see a thread explode away from a question, ask about tipping and gratuities.

Enjoy your cruise.

"What time am I allowed to board at Southampton?" is always entertaining as well :D

PS English lady - Hubby doesn't think any woman needs an excuse for a new dress. What can he mean?;)

Or latterly embarkation times ;)

I am close to despair with this forum now and have stopped coming along as often as I am just fed up of seeing threads get hijacked in this way and insults hurled at those who dare defend their views.

I really don't understand the mindset/motives/agenda of those who feel the need to come to a forum just to insult P&O and anyone who dares to like them and don't seem capable of discussion without insults. It's very sad actually.

To the OP - Thankfully I have never come across this nastiness on board, so it is not typical of the real life P&O passenger, so I am sure you will enjoy your cruise.

On the other hand I have now met quite a few lovely posters from here on other forums and in real life and on board - people who you can discuss different things/opinions with in a reasonable way and people who, if they have reason not to be happy with their holidays, go about it the proper way to resolve it.

If this is being blinkered, then I am more than happy to be labelled 'blinkered' along with them

Thank you. We plan to make the most of it as a cruise is definitely a treat for us. We have cruised before with RCI and loved it. However with two children in tow we are no longer able to afford it but we have been told that p&o offers fabulous kid activities x

I make a fair number of posts about P and O, with whom I have been cruising for 17 years, and the overwhelming majority of them are positive because I really like P and O and enjoy my cruises, even more so now I am retired and can go more often.

I DO have a bit of a bee in my bonnet about the new Boarding arrangements and am easily upset by misinformation; it just happens to be very important to me because the ship is very much my destination;I adore being onboard and can't wait to get there!

I am not at all offended by some of the critical comments my original post has attracted; everyone is entitled to their opinion in a mature democracy.

And yes, I generally enjoy the company of table companions and look forward to seeing them every night; no we don't discuss boarding problems, usually ports pf call, our interests and entertainment/what we're reading etc.

Looking at Iceland-bound cruises from Southampton. Regarding dress code, is Formal really "Black Tie" as they say on the website. Together with photos of nicely dressed gents in tux's. Our only problem with Tux etc, is that we would be flying to the UK then doing land travel in Europe. Would a smart dark suit do?

Yes, any suit with tie will be acceptable.

I must admit that 4 formal nights is too much for me just because by the time the fourth night comes, all my dresses no longer fit well as I have eaten too much food!!.

I have my 'start of the cruise' dresses and my 'I've given up trying and these are much baggier' dresses for the end. ;) Spend all year trying to shed some weight and know I will put it all back on in just 2 weeks --- :D I'm only short, so every pound counts and shows :(

This year I will be running around after two toddlers so hope that I will keep the weight off. I am starting back on my diet next week. My youngest is only 2 weeks old so need the calories at the moment x

Congratulations :D:D Bet you are glad if you have a good night's sleep now :)

I'm at the other end of the age range - at the age where I can not shed weight no matter what I do. Hubby is very happy to brag about his weight loss though
