Have you ever been locked outside on your balcony?

yes! on my cruise on triumph, we boarded somewhat late to avoid the crowds. picked up a drink and went to the room to check on bags and start to settle in. this was shortly before muster was to commence.

my travel partner and i both went out on the balcony to check out the sites before we were to head down to muster. when we went to enter the room, the door handle came off in her hand and was shut tight. there was a moment of 'well now what do we do'... i tried to fix it but wasn't able to for whatever reason.

i looked around to see if there was anybody else on their balcony, nope. i even called out thinking someone in the general area might hear me and could call guest services for us - no response (remember, this was just before muster, so nobody was outside).

we kept looking around and back into the room to see if we could find anybody - after about 15 minutes the room steward came in and i waved my arms around to get his attention and pointed at the door. he came over in a huff. i said 'thank you, we were...' and he cut me off and started chastising us for being on the balcony, 'you have to go to muster drill now it is required', he said (he thought we were trying to skip muster). i said something along the lines of 'we know, we were locked out...' and he interjected 'you MUST go now, it is REQUIRED'.

i said 'thank you, we know, we are on our way now'. i put the door handle in his hand and said 'will you please see this is fixed while we are out. the door was broken and we were locked out.' he seemed surprised and didn't know what to say. sure enough, it was fixed by the time we came back.

however, after that incident we didn't really ever trust it (even after checking with one person in, one person out, etc.) and when we were both on the balcony, we would leave a washcloth in the door so it wouldn't shut fully. :)

My DD and I ate our lunch on the balcony and she left to go to the pool. She locked the door (she claims) by mistake. The sun started taking over what little shade there was. Luckily I had my cruise card on me and just as I was melting in the tiny corner of shade that was left my neighbor came out on her balcony. I gave her my card and she came in and unlocked the balcony. I might have passed out if I was there much longer!

A few years ago we were in cabin E 730. The boys went to the pool and i sat on the balcony in peace and quiet. The room steward asked if he could tidy up and i said yes. Then he went back in did his thing and left.

About 1/2 an hour later i tried to get in the cabin and i could not!!!! He had locked the handle by mistake.

I was out there for about another 1/2 hour until i saw someone on there balcony a few cabins down. I yelled for them to get the room steward to open the door for me. He did and apologized a lot.

To this day, i make sure that the balcony door is open just a little bit so that no one will lock me out again:(

i got locked out of the cabin once. we had just gotten the news that they were ready for access. as we wandered down the hall, I found a gorgeous Venetian Mask in a frame at the door. my SiL collects them so we went in, I placed my card and crap on the bed and went back out to take a picture with my iPhone. Mr Spook immediately headed out to the balcony, closing the door behind him.

so there I was, no way to get back in to the cabin, ringing the doorbell like a crazy person while HE was enjoying the view of the dock for ten minutes. and of course the entire time not one single cabin steward came by and the Concierge who was escorting someone else to their cabin was nowhere to be found either.

LOL, I can imagine you standing outside your cabin 'like Fred Flintstone' banging on the door while your other half is oblivious and anyone coming past cannot recognise you as you have the mask on.;)

  • 2 weeks later...

My daughter and I were sharing a cabin and I went out on the balcony while she was up at the pool. She came back, didn't see me, locked the door and went in to take a shower. I was locked outside on the balcony. Thank goodness she didn't pull the curtains shut. I might have still been out there when she came back from dinner...lol. Since then, we always look outside on the balcony before locking the door.

I haven't but I did accidentally lock my husband out on one cruise. I thought he had already left for his activity and I quickly locked the balcony door, before leaving the cabin.

Fortunately, he was dressed, because it took him about half an hour to attract someone's attention.

I had to eat humble pie and I received a lot of teasing from our cabin steward, who kept asking if DH and I had had a disagreement.

I was cruising transatlantic with a mate who tended to stay up very late whereas I get up early in the morning he would stay in bed until noon. This was a problem with steward who could not clean the cabin. My friend decided that it would be possible for the steward to clean the cabin while he sat out on the balcony having a cigarette, which was then permissible.

I arrived back to the cabin and found steward cleaning and he said friend was on balcony so I joined him to allow steward to complete the clean up service. During part of the cleaning steward must have touched the handle locking it because when we decided to go back into cabin the door was locked.

Getting out of the predicament took a bit of time. Peering round the balcony neither neighbours were in so that was no good. In the end shouting down to lower balconies which we overlooked eventually attracted the attention of other cruisers. We asked them to contact reception which was eventually done and our steward came back to let us off the balcony.

A few years ago someone got locked out while typing a live thread for cruise critic. They asked the cc audience for help. Did anyone know anyone on the ship that they could text, etc. People were calling the corporate office/ship contact information, etc. to report a man locked on the balcony. There was more activity flying around in a 30 minute time frame than I've ever seen. He ending up flagging someone down on a different deck/balcony that came to his aide.

You would have thought they pulled Timmy from the well at the end. High fives going around everywhere.

I remember that. People were calling corporate, sending emails, trying to get in touch with people on board. Just goes to show you the power of thh masses.

Mayabae they should make a button "if locked on balcony please push here".

I got locked out on the balcony for over an hour! My wife and I were out there for a bit, and then she went to trivia. She unconsciously locked the balcony door on her way out. I was yelling for help, with no success. She came back an hour later and came out to the balcony. I don't think I was ever so glad to see her. It turned out our table mates did hear my crys for help, but couldn't figure out where they were coming from.
