Texting and Internet?

Currently on NCL Getaway and have the unlimited Internet package ($30 a day ouch). when I am connected to wifi and I text people it goes throuh on my standard text messaging app.

 

This is a brand new phone, first time I've taken it on a cruise. With my old phone you could not text at all just email.

 

This got me wondering, is it a NCL only feature? Or is it because I have a new phone that is capable of texting over wifi?

Normal SMS text messages only go over the cellular signal. iMessage from one Apple device to another can be set to go over WiFi and Android devices can text over WiFi through various apps, but both the sender and receiver need that app.

 

If you are texting through your cell service (which I would suggest turning off) then you likely are going to see some Cellular at Sea charges on your next wireless bill.

Android V6 on AT&T Samsung phones now has WiFi calling and texting. You can turn it on or off.

What you need to determine is whether you are texting over the WiFi or over cellular. First question. What kind of phone do you have?

Not so easy to categorize anymore. More and more phones are capable of WiFi calling, which would route SMS, MMS, and voice calls over WiFi.

It has nothing to do with NCL - just a new feature of the phone in combination with your plan/provider.

I am using a blackberry priv and I checked my bill no text fees.

 

I hope it works like this on Royal because it is great
