Am I allowed in Canada ?

I am a criminal defense attorney and DUI/DWI's are a real problem when traveling to Canada. There is a process you can go through to be able to go there, and if you google it you should find it easily. It is easier after 10 years, so yours should be easier. I looked into it for someone whose DWI was 8 years old, and it required quite a lot of paperwork, 9 months in advance of the trip, and if I remember right about $200 in costs. He did not have 9 months until the trip so I never followed up on it, but I remember it seemed to be easier after 10 years.

Thanks for all the reply's, I already paid for the cruise and the reservation is in my name so needless to say I'm going. If I cant get off in Canada no worries, for me the ship is the detestation. My mom is older and it would be nice to escort her around in Canada that was my main reason for asking.

I went on Alaskan cruise at the end of August on the NCL Pearl. I have 2 DWI's. The 2nd being in 2001. I did not even try to get off the ship on it's stop in Victoria. I was expecting to get called to somewhere and made to sign a form saying I wouldn't get off the ship because I heard that happens. It didn't happen to me. We weren't there very long and there was nothing we wanted to see anyway. I have a friend who tried to cross several years ago at the border near 1000 Islands. He didn't mention his DUI, in their mind he "lied" to them. They told him to never come back. He has also stated several times that it would cost him 5K to regain entry with no guarantee. I have not seen where it costs more than a couple hundred dollars (still with no guarantee). Incidentally, the form we filled out on the ship before our arrival to Canada seemed more to do with Duty than immigration.

Two weeks ago, I was bringing my mother to Newfoundland via flying from N.Y. however at a connection airport (Toronto) I was turned around by customs because of a DWI conviction in 2002 (my first and only arrest) it was explained to me I would have to obtain a travel visa at a cost of about $2,500 prior to my entry into Canada. My mother continued and I turned around back to N.Y.

Now i am bringing my mother on a cruise, the Gem out of N.Y. on Oct 1st witch has 2 ports of call in Canada. I was able to book it in my name with no problem. Will I be able to escort my mother and get off and back on the ship in Canada without a problem ?

 

Did you not get any paper work from the officer that denied entry? It should explain the terms under which you can reapply to enter the country. This information will be in their computer so when Canadian authorities process the ships passenger list, your name will likely pop.

 

Check the link triptolemus posted (post #4). As you will find, depending on circumstances it may be possible to get an entry permit without having to pay the normal processing fee.

In 2014, I think Canada instituted a program where people from the US with a DUI can get permission to enter Canada. It's called a temporary residence permit. This permit can be issued at the discretion of the customs and immigration officer at the port of entry.

I was a stupid prick 25 years ago, got popped for DUI.

20 years ago was denied entry at the the Soo Locks. Since I was denied entry I always get a hassle entering Canada. Now 20 years later (When driving a motor vehicle) I get questioned in a side room with a light shinning in my face. But they do let me through. I have a CDL now and that makes no difference to them, I still get questioned in the naughty room.

4 cruises, 2 stopping in Victoria, Canada and the others on the east coast Canada... No questions asked. So as another on here said, maybe cause they know you will be wanting to be back on ship in a short time they let you enter. Who knows?

That points to a crucial difference between your situation and the OP's… The OP is currently denied entry to Canada.

And you still continually visit Canada?

 

If they treated me the way you say they treated you I doubt I would let them ever shine that light in my face more than once....

 

 

However, I like the way Canada has the guts to turn people away from entering even though I've come to realize these past 8 years that Canada doesn't seem to consider us their friend any longer

1982 I had DUI in PA and NJ, neither state ever knew about the other one. Went to Japan, South Korea and spent 5 weeks in the Philippines in 1994, never questioned. In 2015 took b2b cruises which both went to Victoria and Vancouver plus we stayed overnight and flew out of Vancouver and never had any problems.Also Hong Kong let me stay for 4 days in 2008. Cruises to Mexico, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rican never had any problems.
