Update on Harmony Life Boat

Kinda thinking it made sense for Royal to keep a spare for inventory...like a spare tire.

Usually lifeboats do not "break" - as Cheng said before. So there is no need to keep a spare one. And the lifeboats are custom made for each ship (or class). Nothing you store like a spare tire (and BTW where would you store it... in Florida... in Europe?).

...........or - the life boat is not damaged and just being withheld by the French authorities as they are still investigating the accident?

That´s what I do think too. The French authorities might withheld the lifeboat for investigations. A lifeboat can drop into the sea without being damaged at all. That´s what it´s made for. The davits and the "lines" might break. A lifeboat does not break that easily.

There may be one far enough along for Oasis IV, to reallocate.

Good to know....I haven't had a flat tire in more than 20 years...so I guess I can just take my spare out of the trunk and sell it.

Well, given that the law requires 125% capacity in lifesaving apparatus, it is more like having a spare for your spare.

We damaged a lifeboat during weight testing about an ice age ago (33-35 years ago), and needed a replacement. Now, these boats were far more common than the Oasis class boats, being used on thousands of oil rigs around the world, but we got lucky that Watercraft had one exactly like we needed in their yard in Orlando (customer had cancelled an order), so we had it flown over from Florida to Portugal on a C-130 freight airliner. But if they hadn't had one in "stock", we would have been months out of service waiting on a new one. That is the last time I've heard of a lifeboat being damaged, even the ones on the RCI ships that sustained "damage" during crossings, it was generally the davit that was damaged, and not the boat.

Good information. Thanks.

Oasis IV is scheduled for 2018. The lifeboats are amongst the last things added. I doubt that Fassmer have already built any for Oasis IV. Way too early!

The exclamation mark emplies an emphatic remark. They may be the the last things delivered, but i doubt they wait till thr the last minute and build them all at once. It was just a thought!! Having managed a production facility I could see some accommodation.

Of the three cars we have bought since moving to Germany, not one has come with a spare---there isn't even a place on the BMW to keep one.

Super safe cars here----very few spare tires being lugged around adding to fuel consumption.

Unlike the tires of the past, and roads of the past, which often led to needing a spare--in this day and age in may places it really does not make sense to carry one.

Bad analogy, sorry :D

Seems we just had an emergency...

Can soneone please link a thread or article that explains what happened? I missed it--and would like to know, given that I am on the Harmony TA which does seem pretty near capacity.

That said--I am not really seeing how an emergency happened? (surely, that I would have heard of). Was there a need to evacuate the ship and use the lifeboats? Are there not enough lifeboats now to be safe for those onboard?

Otherwise, no emergency

During a lifeboat drill by the crew, one of the wire rope "falls" that raise and lower the boat failed, and one crew was killed and 4 others injured when the boat fell and was hanging by one fall. The ship was held for a day in Marseilles, and then the boat was taken away, and the ship has been sailing without a boat since. Search for "accident on Harmony" or "Harmony lifeboat", and you'll find the original thread.

Since there is always 125% of the number of total souls onboard in lifesaving capacity (rafts and boats), there is still sufficient for everyone, but the ship must sail below maximum capacity (not below double occupancy or "normal capacity") until the boat is replaced.

Thank you. Wow. That was defintely an emergency situation, very serious indeed; though having a spare lifeboat would not have been helpful to the injured crew or the one who lost their life. How terrible.

Fassmer is the specialist in building lifeboats. You will find their lifeboats on almost every newbuilt cruiseship (especially the Mega ships). I´m pretty sure they are still occupied with other contracts. It´s more than a year until Oasis IV and building 18 lifeboats for this ship might not take that long.
