cjnix29 Posted October 11, 2016 #1 Share Posted October 11, 2016 I remember seeing something about passport expirations but can't remember or find it. My son's passport will expire in May. We are taking a cruise in December. Will he be ok if something happens? Six months sticks in my head as a bar date? GweninTX Posted October 11, 2016 #2 Share Posted October 11, 2016 It is 6 months, but I would be getting it replaced anyway Sent from my iPhone using Forums
cjnix29 Posted October 11, 2016 Author #3 Share Posted October 11, 2016 I will get it replaced, it is just managing to do it in time, as both my husband and I have to go to the passport office to do it. Rare sparks1093 Posted October 11, 2016 #4 Share Posted October 11, 2016 (edited) It all depends upon where you are cruising because only some countries require passports to have more that 6 months remaining on them. If you are sailing in the Caribbean for example there is no such requirement so you may renew the passport at your convenience and as your personal travel plans dictate. (Carnival only recommends this, although some cruise lines do require it.) Edited October 11, 2016 by sparks1093
paul929207 Posted October 11, 2016 #5 Share Posted October 11, 2016 Where are you sailing? Some countries require the passport to be valid for at least 6 months after you leave their jurisdiction. Most do not require this
cherylandtk Posted October 11, 2016 #6 Share Posted October 11, 2016 I did not see a Roll Call posting from you, but I think you might be on the Magic? If so, what Paul said; there is no excess expiration requirement in the Caribbean. You can renew after your cruise if it is easier.
AFLCruiser Posted October 11, 2016 #7 Share Posted October 11, 2016 (edited) Passport renewals/first time applications are being handled pretty quickly now. It took less than two weeks to get my sons' passports back, and they were all first time applicants. If you did it now, you should have it in plenty of time before your trip. However, since you are going to Canada, the only requirement is that it is valid at time of entry. Since your trip is in December, you should be fine using his current passport (and then renewing it when you get back home). Okay, not sure why I thought you were going to Canada. Anyway, here is a link to look up requirements by country. https://travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/country.html Edited October 11, 2016 by AFLCruiser add link

Many countries have exceptions for cruise ship passengers as they are considered to be in transit.

Sent from my iPhone using Forums mobile app If you are cruising in the Caribbean it is fine, there is no need to rush a renewal. If you are going to Europe you MIGHT have issues, but only if your embarkation country or disembarkation country require six months, and not all do. I would not even consider renewing until after the first of the year.
Rare Keith1010 Posted October 12, 2016 #10 Share Posted October 12, 2016 You would be fine. But if it was me I would just go ahead and replace it. Keith
cheeseclan Posted October 12, 2016 #11 Share Posted October 12, 2016 Many years ago we were sailing on Princess to the Caribbean. I did the immigration paperwork online for everyone in the family but when it came to me, it would not accept my passport. I was a few days shy of the 6 months left. I called Princess and was told to bring my passport, birth certificate (original or certified copy) and my drivers license with me. I showed them all three at check in and i was set. I have never let that happen again. I make sure that the passport still has 6 months left even if it is a closed loop from the US. Not worth the hassle for me if i have to fly home etc.
