* Going to port 2 days early to get used to "being on vacation"

* Stopping on our 4 hour drive to port at the same restaurant for lunch once we leave the Keys

* The Uber ride from the hotel to the port where we can see the Whale Tail

* The first step on the ship when you can feel the engines "thrum" under your feet

* Sitting in the Atrium watching all the peeps boarding

* Our first Lido lunch - mine is always a corned beef and pastrami from the deli, DH's is varied

* Everything else till disembarking!

Walking into my cabin the first evening and seeing the curtains drawn, the lights on, the bed turned down and a towel animal. There is something so comforting about that scene.

Ordering room service breakfast the first morning and enjoying it out on my balcony.

Sitting on my balcony watching the sea go by.

Mongolian Wok on day one. Although if I keep telling people this it'll get too busy

SHUSH....or they'll all want it. :D

Really HAVE missed the Wok on my last few sailings, too.

Being at sea. The rest here is just details.

  • walking up that gangway and knowing I'm on vacation

The infamous DING. Hope it doesn't go away too soon on all ships.

  • watching the pilot boat
  • and the best; watching Blue Cards and their first experiences, we were all one of them once

Those two are also great. I love watching the pilot boat, and I've been on two cruises (on two lines) where the FLL pilot boat pulled up directly below our oceanview window to embark the pilot...really nifty.

For me.....

  • Late-night pizza and lasagna at Pizza Pirate Plus
  • Late-night pool get-togethers with our friends
  • Towel animals.....and seeing the "towel animal invasion" on Lido Deck
  • Relaxing on our aft extended balcony (last cruise)
  • Meeting new and fascinating people, including those on our roll calls
  • Learning new things every time on the Behind the Fun tour
  • Hearing the nice elevator lady say "Deck 10! Pan-o-rama!" Brings a smile every time. :)

So much fun to read everyone's favorite part of the cruise! For me, it's the endless planning & research prior the the cruise, seeing a glimpse of my ship as I approach port, sitting on our balcony while drinking wine as we finally leave on our long awaited vacation, & waking up on our first day to nothing but blue water. I can feel the stress leaving my body already!

Disconnecting for society and normal everyday life at sail away. No phone, no internet, no work, no family stressing me out (besides the ones I cruise with).

I couldn't believe the number of people playing on their phones for long periods of time. Hearing those annoying ring tones, ugh!

I can relate to some of the OP's comments. For me, it's about the 'at sea' experience. I absolutely love sail away and the approach/departure from each and every port. While I don't always make it outside, especially when we get an OV, I cherish those early mornings in the gathering light when I can go outside with a cup of coffee and see the early lights as we approach today's island. I'll call it the Ferdinand Magellan affect.

For me, that's what makes the sea different than other vacations. And while we're on a Carnival board here, that sense is even more magnified on a sailing ship.

Wholeheartedly agree with this. It's the "at sea" for me too! I can just sit on my balcony and watch the sea and the sky for hours. Never gets old. I also love sail away - especially sailing from NYC. It's such a fantastic experience.

I love the sunrises and the sunsets

I also love having all sorts of food choices right close at hand. Hmmm what shall I eat today? My husband says I'm the only person who includes meal planning when anticipating a vacation. On land it means heading out to a restaurant. On a cruise it means a 2 minute elevator ride to the lido!

We have an aft wrap for our next cruise, and I'm psyched. Had one before and spent a lot of time out there!

Getting on the ship, dropping off my suitcase, and going to the casino to check out the "machines."

And then ordering the first beer of the cruise at the casino bar while waiting for the muster drill........vacation has begun!

Being at sea..which encompasses so much but there's no really good way to describe it unless you've cruised. It's still my all time favorite vacation.

Love it when they turn us loose from the muster drill. Woo hoo! We're free and the party REALLY gets to start!

Love the atrium level outdoor deck, especially at night. We'll be trying the cove balcony on our next cruise for the first time and I think I'm going to love it just for that reason.

The first sea day! Like everyone else has said, it's a sea day, and your whole cruise is ahead of you.

Either being at a rail on a deck or on my balcony for sailing away from ports. Fun to watch the comings and goings.

That wonderful excitement stepping onto the ship for the first time..you made it!

Sitting on the deck below the life boats reading and listening to music.

Walking into the room for the first time

Sea day brunch

Sea days. It's a toss up whether I prefer the blue water and white sands or sea days.

I love the preparation up to the cruise and love to introduce new friends and family to cruising.

We love getting dressed up and going to dinner every night , love being waited on.

--And listening to the soothing white-noise sound of the sea rushing by only two decks below you. I love going out on Deck 3 to escape the crowds and watch the ocean flying by.

Sea day brunch

How could I have forgotten this? Sea day brunch was one of the best meals we had on the entire cruise, hands-down, and we had three sea days since HMC got cancelled...again.
