Favorite activities in Seattle

Sailing on HAL in June and planning a few days in Seattle before the cruise, as we have never been there. What are your favorite Seattle activities? Chihuly Garden is already on the list - love his work! TIA

If you're interested in aircraft - especially military air craft would recommend the museum of flight. They have a Concorde jet there as well as other vintage and modern military aircraft. You can take a bus there from downtown Seattle.

I prefer the Future of Flight north of Seattle. Book online or early to secure your tour of the factory where they make the DreamLiner. The tours can sellout by lunch.

Also in the area of Boeing at Paine Field are the Historic Flight Foundation and the Flying Heritage Collection, the latter of which has WWII era planes from all nations involved - most of which are in flying condition and do on occasion.

Another favorite of ours is if weather is nice is to go watch boats (and fish) at the Ballard Locks & Fish Ladder.

Near Chihuly is the Experience Music Project (EMP) and Science Fiction Museum with an amazing collection of guitars and Jimi Hendrix memorabilia as well as a great Sci-Fi collection and rotating exhibits.

Or, take ferry to Bainbridge Is. or Bremerton for a cruise before the cruise.

We're doing HAL in June too but have 221 days (as of today) to do stuff before the cruise. There's plenty enough around here to do to fill even that many days. ;)

So far a lot of good suggestions. Have dinner (or lunch) at the Space Needle. You will need reservations, and having a meal at the restaurant also includes the elevator fare up to the top and lets you spend as much time on the observation deck after you are done with your meal. It's a great way to dine and see the vista of the Puget Sound all in one place. The dining room rotates, so you'll see the panorama a number of times before you are done dining. The quality of food is better than average, but rather expensive (just remember that your elevator fare is included in the meal)

With Chihuly, EMP (which was recently renamed, but same basic stuff right now), Science Fiction Museum and the Space Needle all at the Seattle Center, you can check off a lot of stuff without having to travel around a lot. Oh, and you can also take the monorail. It only goes down 5th Ave to the Pacific Place mall, but it is a fun ride.

You may also want to consider meandering the waterfront. The big wheel is down there, along with plenty of decent food and touristy places. The Seattle Aquarium is also on the waterfront and is a good aquarium. Ivar's Acres of Clams is at Pier 54 and is a good restaurant in spite of it being in a highly trafficked tourist location. You might also want to check out the Pike Place Market. Again, touristy, but the locals really do shop there for stuff. The first Starbucks is nearby the Market, and Beecher's Cheese has both cheese and comfort food that is to die for. Again, touristy, but the product is good, also across the street from the Market.

The Museum of Flight which is real close to Sea-Tac is the best attraction in Seattle, can easily spend 4 hours at the Museum. The Ballard Locks and Fish ladder (free) is another attraction that is always interesting - Salmon going through the Fish ladder, Boats, sea lions and the working of the locks itself up to a 32 foot drop. Downtown Seattle attractions are way overrated.
