Dinner with Senior Officers

Recommended Posts

"ordinary folks"? What do you call the others?

We were invited to dine at the captain's table with the staff captain. We met the captain a few days earlier and received an invitation. It was our first cruise ever and we were in a standard balcony. We didn't even know they did this. So I guess ordinary people get invitations also.

BTW, I would never pay for this.

Yes, it does happen to "ordinary people". We got invited to dine with Captain Espen on the Freedom this summer. We were merely Emeralds and staying in a Junior Suite. Turns out, Captain Espen is also a pilot (like myself) and the two of us spent the majority of dinner talking airplanes. It was amazing!

I agree, it does happen to ordinary people, as I also consider us ordinary. I didn't understand why he was calling one group of people ordinary and wondering what he would call the others? Superior? Maybe I missed something. The Staff Captain was very interested in Mike's flying, but they kept it to a minimum due to respect for the others. They ended up talking later. BTW, I also have my pilots license. Flying is truly fun.

I'm still wondering why this would be exciting or special though. So...they sail the ship, I don't get how that makes them any kind of interesting celebrity. 99% of people will never get to do it, but 99% probably don't care. I'm not interested in having dinner with the pilot of my plane, or the driver of my taxi. To me it's the same thing.

I agree 100% with you on this. I have no desire to dine with the captain, I don't have any desire to dine with the CEO of the company I work for. These people are just people doing a job. For sure, I would not pay to dine with a senior officer. I guess a lot of people think it is special to get invited, but to each their own

A retired Navy Captain and now a pilot for American which I don't see why that matters. I also still don't understand the "ordinary people" comment.

Shared interests amongst those who have sailed for a living.

Ordinary is Joe the plumber, I doubt the senior staff would seek them out.

You know that, you're just being smart.

Once again, pilots are not ordinary people. Tiny percentage of the population.

Hi John,

Mike's rank is a captain (06). He was not a captain on a ship, but was a pilot in the Navy. Sorry for the confusion, but now I understand what you meant about ordinary/not ordinary. You are referring to the percentage of people with certain jobs. I wasn't trying to be smart, I guess some of my blonde hairs are showing thru. :D

No worries, please thank him for his service. And thank you as well. Being a navy wife is not easy.

Our son is a reactor operator on the Reagan. We don't get to hear from him much
