Credit Card Holds on RCCL

Be warned they do daily authorizations on your credit card. I have $972.14 still pending even though they have run the final charge. Been on hold for 40+ minutes with RCCL trying to get them released. She told me that Citi Cards usually drop 30 DAYS after the cruise ends.

It took almost two weeks for my CC holds on Serenade even after final charge.

Never had a problem with holds on my CC ...I normally use Capital One...when I get off the ship all that show's on my online statement is pending charges...which usually post within a couple days...

Same here, but the last cruise we were on this past October was different. This time I saw several pending charges (besides the final onboard account charge) that persisted for about a week after the cruise.

I had covered 4 cabins on our last cruise. 3 were charged the last morning and 1 was credited within 3 days... (all on Discover Card)

I know they put holds on debit cards but never heard of them putting a hold on a CC

Actually, the card I use while cruising is indeed a Debit Card tied to my bank account. SO has a true Credit Card on her account. I do this so I will not exceed my personal limit in the Casino.

I wonder if this is the reason for a longer hold.... but it is ok, I put money in this account before I leave that I can afford to lose and no more.

Using a debit card means there is no "hold". You can't place a credit "hold" on a debit card, because there is no credit tied to it. It's simply a cash withdrawal tool. And when a credit card merchant places a "hold", the issuing bank withdraws the funds. It's a bank issue regarding how long it takes to get it back on the card (i.e. back in the account).

This is one of the many reasons why a debit card is a TERRIBLE financial vehicle. If you don't trust yourself with a high credit limit, get a credit card with a low limit. There are a million better solutions to using a debit card.

But.... there's a sucker born every minute! And the bank continue to get rich on them....

Sorry leisure traveler that is totally wrong. The bank does not withdraw the money. Same as when you deposit a check, a hold is placed for the check.

I have posted this over and over. RCI does a pre-auth every night for the amount you spent that day, for every kind of card. What and how long it appears is up to the bank. RCI does not control this.

A hold on a credit card means your credit limit has been reduced and if you are maxed out no more spending. Beyond that it is meaningless.

A hold does not reduce your credit limit, it just reduces the amount of credit available

I don't care what it is called but I had pending charges that eventually fell off on my checking account.

Forgive me, I misspoke. They do not "withdraw" the money. However, they do effectively deduct that amount from the available balance. I can go on my credit card websites and see the "holds" as pending charges. If I ever used my debit card, it would show it as a deduction from the balance.

How long it takes to restore it once RCI (or any merchant) releases the hold is entirely up to the bank and their policies.

But, debit cards are still terrible nonetheless...

Of course you did. It's just that it's a much messier process should any charges no drop off. With a credit card, you don't pay anything until the due date. And this provides a window where you can dispute a charge with no skin being given up on your end. Erroneous or fraudulent charges on a debit card mean the money is already gone. You might be able to get it back, or get the charge reversed. But it's a lot more of a hassle, and until you do, you're out the money.

Do you get 1900+ points ( if you have rccl credit card) since it takes 30 days to fall off? Would be nice if you did.

  • 1 month later...

It is not one particular card that has a long retention time. Three different cards on three different RCL cruises with month-long holds. I called and was told they would drop off in 5-7 days after the cruise. The problem was that it had already been 12 working days since we got back. When I mentioned this..."There's nothing we can do."

Authorized amount counts as a boost to reported income until end-of-month for stock reporting?

Who knows?

Whatever the reason, it's a real pain in the butt.

Just got off freedom on Sunday. Got an extra charge on my credit Sunday for I assume the water in the fridge that I never touched. Will this go away or do I need to contact them. I reserved the cruise through a travel agent. Being in Canadian currency it's an expensive bottles of water.

For this reason I always use a prepaid Netspend card while traveling. I actually learned that trick here on cruise critic. Since it's prepaid hotels and merchants can't charge more than you actually have on the card, and you can't go over your spending budget. I of course have my real bank card and a credit card with me in case I need it, but I try not to use it unless it's an emergency.

You will need to contact RCI. This is an ongoing issue with far too many passengers.

I know this a somewhat old thread, but this just happened to me! I was wondering how common this is.I was onboard the Allure 6/18-6/25. I still have pending charges. I called Citi last night and they told me I had to call RCL. I called RCL last night and the girl told me they were closed, call back today between 8-8. I called after 8 tonight since that's when I got home and I got the same it could take 30 days to come off!!! That's crazy!! They already charged my card for the bill. The girl told me they had to get some merchant # or something from whatever dept, which of course it closed and also closed tomorrow since it's a holiday!! So, basicallyI have to call back yet again and hope that someone will be able to get whatever # and call Citi to get it dropped!! The girl did act like she was trying to figure out a way to fix it, but she couldn't and kept telling me the same stuff over and over and put me on hold a few times!!! This is really annoying!!
