Is there a beach in Nassau that you can just walk to and hang out? Where you don't have to pay for an excursion?

Also, does anyone know of any zipline place close by? Carnival doesn't offer it as an excursion. :(

Junkanoo Beach is close by (maybe a 15 minute walk) and free and you get what you pay for. Its not particularly nice and on our most recent visit (first week in November) it had deteriorated to having loud guys with microphones screaming constantly to buy beer, rent chairs etc. and thumping hip-hop music blaring. If that is your thing enjoy.

Take the #10 bus to Saunders Beach. Very quiet, peaceful, and only locals. There are clean restrooms a playground and security. There are no vendors and no chair rentals so bring your towels. There are some benches you can use for free. There are no food vendors but a Pizza Hut and KFC are across the street. The bus is about $3 round trip. 10 minute drive.

While I agree that you get what you pay for, we love Junkanoo beach, and Tiki Bikini Hut in particular. Google it, or look it up on trip advisor. Also check the Bahamas forum here on cruise critic. On our trip in September, we befriended Byron, the owner of Tiki Bikini. We went back just last week, and he and his staff were so awesome to us. We enjoy it, and my kids (13, 12, and 6) love it too. We've been to Melia (back when if was a Sheraton), and liked that, too. Definitely a nicer, prettier beach, with great pools and amenities. We just like the freedom and ease (and price) of walking over to Junkanoo and Tiki Bikini.

I've never seen zip lining in Nassau...I don't know that they have the trees/geography for it?

No zip lines in Nassau. Highest point is top of Queen's steps and they are not that tall. You can get a day pass to Atlantis and do some of the water activities offered. Some times cruises have this as an excursion. Other times you need to go there and buy the day pass, which can be expensive.

On Junkaroo Beach, leave the ship and go to the right. After Apprx 15 minute walk you will find a long jetty. Next to it, there is a stand that sells out the front and in the back is the cooking area. We went there and asked what the costs for 11 people would be. Owner was real nice and gave us a local(?) food meal and unlimited soda. Cost per person $15 which was a great deal as we were there all day.

I'm pretty sure that the "nicer, prettier beach" referred to is Cable Beach, with 3 hotels, a casino, and restaurants and restrooms. Cab or bus over though, can't walk there. Has to be the best beach on the isle, not sure why most cruisers don't bother going there.

We couldn't find any public beach areas at Cable Beach. After wandering around for a while, we spoke with a hotel employee who was waiting on the bus. She suggested we walk down a side street and sit at edge of Melia's property. Security from the hotel approached us within 5 minutes. So we left and hit the Daquiri Shack and headed back to port...

Note: the walk down the side street was very sketchy. Lots of broken glass and it appeared some folks were living in their cars. Kinda scary for two women and two 16 year old girls... the kids were traumatized. :o LOL My friend and I laughed it off over a few drinks... its was an adventure for sure!!!

I guess the safest bet is to suck it up and buy the day pass.:D
