Hotels close to the cruise port don't have airport shuttles. Downtown hotels run about $300 USD . Decide what you want to see , then figure out which hotel location is best for you.

Downtown Vancouver to airport taxi is about $40 CDN.

We stayed at the Ramada Inn downtown for less than $250 a night in August of 2015. It is walking distance from Canada Place. We were there two days and never found it necessary to use a cab or rent a car to get around. We did have to get a cab to the airport tho.

It really depends on what you want but your requirements would be best served by getting a hotel near to the airport.

We regularly fly into and out of YVA and would recommend Richmond, we use either Ramada (Westminster) or la Quinta (Alexandra) both of which have a very good shuttle service and free breakfast and would be under $200. Both are about 5 minutes walk from a Canada Line station, we have walked to them often with luggage. Both will also look after your luggage if you arrive very early.

Take the Canada Line from Waterfront, an easy walk from Canada Place, deposit your luggage and then return to town to spend the day there. Get a "day" special that you can use on the subway, buses and sea bus. Eat at one of the many restaurants in Richmond.

Best deal anywhere in the city is undoubtedly the YWCA hotel - it's cheaper than airport hotels, in a great location, clean & safe, and does have regular hotel rooms (en suite twins & doubles) as well as larger rooms for up to 5, shared bathrooms etc. Even a high season private bath double room is less than CAD$150 - with taxes that's approx US$120 a night.

If you can't bring yourself to 'stay at the Y' then book a refundable rate that you can live with - and keep checking. Non-refundable deals appear all the time in decent, 3* plus properties downtown for under $200 even in cruise season. If you can tolerate not knowing the exact hotel, a blind bidding site may give a very good rate - as long as you stick to downtown and 4* or better it is literally impossible to end up in a bad location.

Airport/suburban hotels are cheaper, but for a 1 night stay the lost time going to drop your bags and return downtown is a poor choice IMO - and if you're not comfortable using transit also more expensive than staying downtown, since a round trip cab ride is going to be at least $70.
