Lunch Recommendations Portage/Girdwood area

We are a group of 12 that will be driving from Anchorage down to Seward, and want to stop for lunch somewhere around the Girdwood or Portage area before going to Alaska Wildlife Center. Any recommendations for something good but not terribly pricey?

The Bake Shop in Girdwood is very good. Soups, sandwiches and casual. It gets busy during lunch though. http://www.thebakeshop.com/

If down by Portage there is the Portage Glacier Lodge. Very casual and they are supposed to have some very good clam chowder.

If you have the time (and are willing to spend a little extra) I would do the tram/lunch combo at Alyeska. You get a tram ride up the mountain for a beautiful view and a voucher at the Bore Tide Deli, which we've always gotten a good meal at. The $20 voucher for lunch is more than enough for one person, so we've always broken up into groups of three: two people buy the combo, one person buys just a ticket and the three of them eat off two vouchers.

WE SECOND THIS RECOMMENDATION!! We had the best time doing this as well. Fun ride up to the top of the ski tram and then we had a great sandwich and beers. TIP: One order of fries will probably feed 3 of you easily!! They are very good but don't get one order per person ;) We will be repeating this, next year :-) Have a great time. thank you for all the great ideas....I am not sure we will have time for the tram ride up with our schedule but maybe...but I do appreciate everyone's suggestions on places for lunch, this will help us.....

We bought sandwiches and accompanying items at Carrs (a Safeway/Albertsons company store) and had a picnic lunch at the Wildlife Center. The sun came out, and we had a great time.

Definitely. It just depends on what amenities you want. It also depends on what you consider "budget." The dollar amount of "budget" varies greatly from person to person.

It's somewhat spendy, but one of our favorite places to eat in Girdwood is Double Musky Inn. Excellent food and drinks.

Great ... it is only for one night so just need a basic room. You are right about budget and ours varies greatly... right now in Vietnam we are getting 5 star quality for under 20 a night but from what I have seen on prices in Alaska I guess something under 150 would be great!?!?

I agree with Double Musky. It is a dinner only rest. and I think it opens at 5:00. Get there early as the line forms in the parking lot. Great Cajun food!

Always forget they aren't open for lunch. That's unfortunate. If you happen to be traveling on a Tuesday, Sitzmark does $2 tacos - cheap way to feed a big group. The rest of their food is decent bar food, and about average Alaska prices. Nice location though, backed right up to the mountain with a large deck. Silvertip Grill is another one worth checking out. I've only ever been for breakfast, but it's always been great so I wouldn't hesitate to have lunch there.
