Those Darn Pool Deck Chairs

There's already a 'rule' that you should not save chairs - what makes you think the 'rule' to activate the timer will be followed? LOL.

The timer/device needs to be automatic/self starting - e.g the weight of a 'body' on the chair keeps it dormant but once the body is 'off' then the timer starts ....for the 30 minute time limit.....if you (or another body) occupies the chair then it stops and would restart next time the chair is vacated :) Maybe even have a light on it - e.g. red light means timer is 'clicking' down - but when green light appears - the chair can be yours!!! (and yes spring loaded so it 'throws' off whatever is on the seat would be an exciting bonus ha ha ha).

I like the idea, but I could see the spring loading being a problem when my skinny preschooler tried to lounge...

Just move the lone flip flop to wherever it's mate is and put the folded towel at the bottom of the lounger until the owner comes to retrieve it. From my experiences on other lines this seems to be a Carnival "thing." I agree that if people are just assertive much can be accomplished. As far as loungers for little kids, how many of them actually use the loungers - very few - they are running all over the place and in the pool. It's really not difficult for the towel folks to watch the area around the pool. Shame on them if they let people put out towels at 8 AM that are unsed for hours and hours.

Totally agree on the kid thing. My pet peeve is when a family insists on saving a chair for each and every kid, no matter how young. Not to mention that not only are the kids rarely ever in the chairs, it's even more unlikely that all of them would be there at the same time. We use 2 chairs for the 4 of us. (Kids are 8 & 6) When they want a break from the pool, they just sit at the end of our chairs.

there should be a rule of no saving of chairs at all. Or at most 10 minutes. I don't think it's fair that you get to go get lunch and still save your chair. Maybe instead of a manual timer, you have a weight timer in the chair that automatically turns a indicator green after a certain time (10 minutes), of no weight

Maybe they should have to check out chairs. And only for that cabin. That way they can see how many are in the cabin and can't get any more than that. No saving, no arguing. And that shows they mean business about not saving chairs. Just my HO.

How about just a little LED light on the back of the chair that stays green for 30 minutes after you hit a button, then turns red. That way when you're in it you can just periodically hit the button to keep going. If you see a red light, the chair is fair game.

Or how about people just man up a little. If a chair is obviously saved, then just remove the towel, chuck it away. When the "owner" returns to claim their chair just tell them. And tell them loudly to embarrass them. If they want to try to move me, let them try.

I have several times moved peoples stuff off chairs. And 45 mins to an hour later, they come back bitching about why it was moved. I just tell them the stuff was moved when I sat there. I also tell them its against cruise policy to "take over" deck chairs.

Yeah been there and done that, and while effective its not exactly preferable to have someone come yell at you for 5 minutes then just stand in front of the chair staring at you for another 10 before going off to yell at the nearest employee

I moved items when every lounger had a neatly folded towel at 8 a.m. with no people in sight, or one person claiming ten prime loungers in the morning sun for family that would arrive hours later. If you're grabbing lunch and returning to your chairs to eat, no problem. If you're going to sit in the buffet area to eat and return an hour later, vacate your lounger for some poor mom who wants to sit for a half hour and watch her kids in the pool. When you get back, someone else will have gone to lunch or to the casino and you can sit in their lounger. No loungers go to waste and everyone is happy.

I wish everyone thought like this but too people are selfish and rude and only think of themselves. People need tk be assertive and just move their stuff away. Too many people are afraid of confrontation though...lol not me

I agree something has to be done especially when rules ate posted and staff is not enforcing them. Idk if this would work but complaining at customer service in droves all day everyday buy tons of people demanding they enforce their own rules!! I have to say I'm nonconfrontational so it's hard for me to move things knowing someone will make a scene. Light thing would be good when you leave chair you start light timer or if some or staff walks buy no light on they can remove belongings.

Needs cooperation from line itself for it to ever change and Carnival will never ever do it. Been in lines where chairs are reserved by stateroom. Been on line where pool attendant flags chair for 30-40 minutes for lunch, bathroom etc. If not back, loads up stuff and opens lounger. Been in cruise where they were testing reserving loungers for the week. BUT anything would require a pro active Corporate decision. Not happening with Carnival.

Many people go get their lunch and come back and eat it in the chair, this at times, can take longer than 10 minutes if lines in buffet are long.

Ahhhh...the benefits of having a private balcony where I can get sun and read or nap in peace. We do not use the people soup pools (and whatever else is going on in those pools, ewwww). I get my fill of the sun each day with a good book, if I am hungry I call room service or leave my book on my chair and go get a plate to bring back, oh and look, my book and chair still there. I only spend maybe 2-3 hours or so relaxing in the sun on a sea day. Balcony works great or a chair on the upper decks. No rude people to yell that they had their stuff there, no confrontation stress in front of hundreds of people looking on and no missing the best part of the sun that day by walking around looking for chairs.

Look, its a problem for all cruise lines and people are self fish and rude no matter which line you are on (yes, even those that you spend a lot more on and not full of walmart type people (according to many people about CCL)).

Hey, idea, make the cabin servicers monitor the pool deck chairs in addition to the extra cabins! Then the tips would not have to be adjusted for 1x time cabin service, hmmmmm!

I agree that some people go too far when saving chairs but my wife and I will save our chairs while we grab lunch and come back it may take 20 minutes to stand in Buffet line and I do not think we are being wrong for doing so and if someone move my stuff I would be pissed

That's PERFECTLY fine. Moreover your chair neighbors for the morning will know that you've been there and are simply grabbing lunch. What folks are objecting to is the practice of going out at 7a, putting a single flipflop on 4 chairs in a row, and not coming out to sit there until 10a. I'll have ZERO problem piling that all on one chair down at the end of the row and sitting down with my coffee and towel it what had been 'their' chair.

Another technique is to catch the eye and nod from the passing bartender as he walks by when you pile the stuff. His tacit approval 'counts'. Flipflops don't buy drinks. All good.

I often stay in the pool or hot tub for more than 10 minutes. God forbid the person who moves this MENOPAUSAL woman's stuff. Lol! I heard a few people say 10 minutes and move the stuff. That is insane

Yeah that or like the person that I described on the last page. Her group of 4 put their stuff down on 4 chairs, went and sat at the bar for 45+ min, then went inside and ate lunch inside, then yelled at us when we moved her stuff (WITH the pool guy's approval)

If Carnival truly wanted to take care of the problem they could. It seems as if they have become more "conflict avoidance" as time passes. It seems as if they have gotten to where they do not wish to back up any of their rules.

i'm with you!

So many other places to lounge without all the drama.:)

i agree 100% ...there are all sorts of loungers besides the ones by the pool...i prefer one level up, closer to the ocean...no problem getting a lounger up there
