Cheers / Beer

Have you actually done it where you by cheers on day 2 and your drinks from day 1 get rolled into cheers price? I have seen many, many conflicting responses on this exact question.

We did not try it. But we had to separate bar tenders on the second day tell us the exact same thing in February that it would work that way. So again I would ask on the ship if you're not going to pre-purchase it

We did purchase it midway through the first day, and they applied all the drinks we had previous in the day. That was a few years ago though when cheers first came out.

Something to look at, you dont have to buy CHEERS the first day. Assuming you are not sailing from NY or Texas, you can get it the second day.

So, you can drink like you want on the first day... look back on it the morning of the second day ( get a print out of your bill from guest services or the kiosk that are on the ship) and decide if it would have been worth it. Then decide if you think you will continue to drink that much or not...

If you buy it the second day, all the drinks up to 15 from day one will be changed to CHEERS drinks. and you wont be charged for them.

Based on your suggested drinking pattern at home, I would guess CHEERS will either not be worth it, or it will be really close.

When did it become retroactive. I thought it was 6 a.m. -6 a.m timeframe. Never heard of your scenario before.

Granted I have sailed Carnival since 2009, but that seems very strange.

I just got back Monday unless ships have different rules which I kinda don't see but they might work with you. But I seen a couple try to get cheers the second day and it was after lunch they ask if the drinks they already got would count toward the 15 they told them no the 15 would start then. And it's 6am-6pm

I am going to just say that the two different bar staff asked and it seemed that way. Since we did not do it, I cant say if it actually would have worked.

I would go with it does not work, since others have reported that they actually tried.

It has never been done that way. Any drinks that are purchased prior to purchasing Cheers are charged at full price and not rolled in. Also, when the program started you had the option to buy it on day one or wait and start on day two. That is no longer an option. You must purchase the program on day one unless you are embarking from Texas or NY, where the program officially starts at 600 am on day two.

Okay, one question: we are sailing from NY. If I don't pre purchase Cheers, but purchase it on the 2nd day because that is the day it is actually available, or even purchase it the lst NIGHT of the cruise, are they going to charge me the extra $5/pp/day because I did not pre purchase or do they waive that because we can't purchase it for embarktion day anyway. (does this make sense to anyone? :o)

Can't be 6 am-6pm. You wouldn't have many in the bars at night.

Pretty sure it is a 24 hr. Cycle

Answered in other thread as well..If you prepay, you will be charged for 6 days on your 7 day cruise because of the day 2 start rule from NY. If you wait till you're on board, you'll pay the extra 5.00 per day.

Based on the info you've posted, and on the fact that you'll be on vacation and not just doing yard work around the house, I'd say buy it--especially early when you save money by doing so. I figure you'll at least break even, and might find yourself letting your hair down and coming out slightly ahead.

We've never bought it before, but we did for our cruise this summer. I can guarantee you that based on our day-to-day routine and what I know us to do on cruises, we'll be significantly ahead.

We are beer drinkers with an occasional Miami vice thrown in the mix, and we have tried cruises with, and without Cheers. Our opinion is the savings are not worth it. Its nice to go to the Serenity Deck and order a bucket and kick back. Want a few to take back to the room? No problem, order all you want. Room service will hook you up as well, if you don't have Cheers. There is no argument Cheers is less expensive but we don't get to do this near enough, therefore we prefer to go by our own rules. Unless you just go crazy it really hasn't been that much higher cost without Cheers in our experience. Lot less hassle without it for sure. We are done with it.

I completely understand this approach. My only--and I mean only--regret on the purchase is that there are no multiples (i.e., buckets of beer) allowed. I really like ordering one and taking it back to the lounge chairs to share with CW.

Their wait staff had better be on the ball!

Since you're beer drinkers once you hit number 9, you're loosing money. And if you're a serious beer drinker, 9 per day is nothing. Can't see what hassle there is about the program beer wise except for the fact you can't buy a bucket and have them all be applied to the program.

It's all good, Carnival is making more money off of you, so they are happy.

I have noticed, ( just in the last couple cruises) that the bartenders typically give us 2-4 (between the 2 of us) free drinks a day. I'm not sure why......the only thing I can think of is I am a very good tipper!

I'd love to know the secret to this one! Do you tip good?

I've heard about when you hit like 1500 points in the casino you can get free drinks there. I honesty could easily see one of hitting that before the cruise is up but I've also heard it's not always the easiest thing to get someone to bring you those free drinks.

If you have CHEERS they will not give you the "Drinks on Us" Card in the casino. They used to be two different programs, where you could net out 30 drinks a day, but they "combined" them now.

I am a heavy casino user, and that is a common complaint of several people playing around me that they do not give the card if you have CHEERS...

If you do get the "Drinks on Us" card from the casino, I suggest you find a favorite bar server... last cruise we tipped him $2 dollars for each drink the first day and asked him to check on us every pass through the casino. After the first day I tipped $1 every drink and he was never far away. It was nice having good service in the casino bar area for a change...

Note with "Drinks on Us" you can not go to the bar for a drink, you have to be playing. So either at a machine or a table game. So even with tipping it is much slower than CHEERS when you can just go get a drink at any bar when you want.

  • 1 year later...
We took the time on the last night and got a print out of our bill. On the bill print out it shows $0.00 for anything used with cheers. So we used the carnival hub app and seen the prices on it and wrote them down on the sheet so we could see if it was worth it. I figured them up when we got home and was relaxing.

Day 1= 142.7

Day 2= 146.3

Day 3= 141.4

Day 4= 154.4

Total= $584.80 for 2 people

That is what it would have cost us for every drink we got. So we saved money and we didn't drink 15 alcoholic drinks a day.

This does not include the auto gratuities that's added or we tipped.

The $584.80 was as if you didnt have Cheers. I apologize if I missed you saying how long you cruised for, to get the cheers price from that post.

What did cheers cost you for this cruise?

Im heading on a 4 day and we tried to do the same thing prior with prices and the spreadsheet indicates we will lose money.

But simulation vs reality when your vacationing is a whole different animal...LOL

That post is from a year and a half ago. At the time cheers was $49.99/per day/per person before the 15% gratuity. Now it is $51.99/per day/per person before the 15% gratuity.

Thats what tipped our decision to not get it for our upcoming 4 day. We dont like other peoples rules, we like our rules!

Cheers is no value for beer drinkers. In ports, a beer is $2 or so at the local places. On the ship it is more expensive, but unless you drink a whole lot of beer, you'll be better off paying as you go.

Another aspect is: what if you get ill, and don't want to drink anything (norovirus, etc?) then your Cheers money is wasted. If you pay as you go you save.

A few bucks difference, thats a nice surprise that it hasnt gone up as half as much as food, gas and what we buy to live on every day....LOL

Depends on the person I guess. Lately when it comes to beer I've been mostly drinking Boston Lager on board which is $6.50. If I just drank 8 of those I would break even...Probably break even at 7 if you took into account my specialty coffee and bottled water.

And if you can't drink 7 beers per day on a 4 day cruise, then you're not much of a drinker and you should not even contemplate Cheers.
