Rare MicCanberra Posted June 12, 2017 #53 Share Posted June 12, 2017 It looks like a car-carrier. I think it looks too small for that, maybe one of the smaller cruise ships. Perhaps 300-500 or so pax.

We awoke one morning to the ship blowing it's horn every minute or 30 seconds, and looking out side we could not see a thing through the fog!! It lasted all day, the fog and horn blowing, just eerie. We also had a medical emergency out there, a patient had to be transferred by tender to an island where another boat was taking them to Russia for medical treatment. A memorable cruise that used to happen when the Diamond came across that way after the Alaska season.

You were lucky with the Bering Sea . It has a wicked reputation. We joined Regents Seven Seas Mariner for a small segment around NZ a few years ago when she was doing the "Ring of Fire " cruise where she circled the Pacific. All we heard were the stories from when they crossed the Bering Sea. It was so rough the Captain did not leave the bridge for 4 days solid as he battled to keep the ship going. At Vladivostok he was taken off the ship and admitted to hospital for exhaustion. He caught up a few days later in China.
chaz cruiser Posted June 15, 2017 #60 Share Posted June 15, 2017 They have already had a time with low visibility and fog horns between Beijing and Nagasaki. My Mum & sister said it was an interesting experience and not one we are used to cruising the South Pacific... We dodged two major storm front in the north Pacific and Berring sea and then needed to avoid a Super typhoon coming up from Japan. We got caught in Whittier for an extra 14 hours waiting for the wind to drop. Then used the Aleutian Islands to avoid most of the rough weather/seas before surfing down to Japan at a speed (25.7 knots/h) faster than the Ship's normal top speed (23 knots/h). the captain made a special announcement. Very exciting and memorable.
