Rare sparks1093 Posted June 27, 2017 #4 Share Posted June 27, 2017 A lot depends on where you are going. As a general rule a US citizen on a closed loop cruise (leaving and returning to the same US port cruising to/from Canada, Bermuda, Mexico or the Caribbean) do not need a passport unless required by their cruise line. These passengers may use a passport card, an Enhanced Drivers License, or a government issued photo ID coupled with proof of citizenship (government issued birth certificate, naturalization certificate or Consular Report of birth abroad). US citizens under 16 need only the proof of citizenship.
lisiamc Posted June 27, 2017 #5 Share Posted June 27, 2017 There is a huge thread here which talks about who needs a passport and who does not. It's a good idea to look at the stickies at the top of message board pages. There's usually a lot of good info there.
Bonnie J. Posted June 27, 2017 #6 Share Posted June 27, 2017 If you do not have a passport you MUST have your birth certificate- and NOT the hospital one, the one issued by the town or county you were born in. And you need a driver's license or other form of ID. If you don't have these, you will not be allowed to board the ship and you will not get ANY money back! But a passport is good tor TEN years. Divide the cost by 10 and it is not that expensive- for 10 years!

Divide the cost by 10 and it is not that expensive- for 10 years! No, not quite. As I mentioned there are other alternatives to using a birth certificate. Since most people do have both their birth certificate and a photo ID at hand it's not an onerous proposition for them to produce them. And you can play all of the mind tricks you want to but the passport cost must be paid upfront and not over time. For one or two people it isn't too much but when you start looking at those in a family it can add up quite quickly. People should decide what travel documentation they need based on their individual travel needs and their own risk factors. For some that will be a passport, for others an EDL, for other a passport card and still others a birth certificate/gov't issued photo ID.
zqvol Posted June 27, 2017 #8 Share Posted June 27, 2017 Do you need a passport for all cruises? Sent from my iPhone using Forums Note that the questions asks about ALL cruises. The answer to that question is NO. Since it is not necessary to answer the question I am not going to get into the pros and cons of cruising with or without a passport. NurseDave Posted June 27, 2017 #9 Share Posted June 27, 2017 Note that the questions asks about ALL cruises. The answer to that question is NO. Since it is not necessary to answer the question I am not going to get into the pros and cons of cruising with or without a passport. No needs, there should still be two more pages coming of people that are answering a question that's been answered or repeating opinions.
