Is it time carnival goes mega ship?

We priced out Seaside for next year as well. But I decided I really would rather wait until we get some feed back, ship tours, etc before committing to it. Kind of like Vista - glad we didn't end up booking it.

And I was quite happy with Vista.....different oars in the water, that's all......

Why not just fly to the destination? You must really hate Carnival then. Why would you want to play basketball, mini golf, watch a movie, visit a bar/restaurant, comedy show, swim in a pool or anything else on a ship that you can do in port? If it's all about just getting to the destination and not the ship, I couldn't think of a worse way to travel than a big slow cruise ship that offers nothing you want to do to pass the time. You can get to Nassau in 35 minutes on JetBlue. Why would you sail overnight and all that nonsense?

I do fly to most destinations that is why I will never be platinum. I use the cruise experience to see places I want to go back and spend extended time at. You need to stop projecting i have never said I hated carnival I don't spend my money on things I don't like. I am headed to Dubai for New Years and then town more cruises before going to Thailand next year. Thanks for your unneeded concern for my travel plans and rest assure your airline advice is not request or needed. Have a blessed day

Carnival's similar layout is one of the things that appeals most to my DH about Carnival. He prefers the smaller to mid-size ships where he knows his way around without getting lost. I prefer the mid-size, large, and mega-size ships. I like exploring new areas and getting new venues. Both of our opinions are valid as they relate to us and our cruise choices reflect a willingness on both of our parts to compromise with each other. The problem on this thread is that no one has to compromise with any one else, your vacation choices are your own, thus posters are throwing out their opinions as being the most valid. But in fact all the opinions are valid to the person making them. We are not alike. Our opinions will vary based on our own individual preferences.

Having said that I see Carnival moving on and pushing the size barrier for themselves, albeit at a slower pace than NCL and Royal and possible other cruise lines. But I also don't see the smaller, mid-size ships disappearing overnight on any of the lines. They will slowly phase out but I really don't see that phase out being completed in my life time. IMHO the choice will remain for us small, mid-size, large or mega ship until the day we make our final sail hopefully in 20-30 years. Anything beyond that....really doesn't matter to me. Probably shouldn't matter to most of you either ;).

You like all size ships. That's awesome! I appreciate ALL ships as well. Did your DH have a chance to sail on Oasis? I personally found that ship much easier to navigate my way around than Carnival Glory. The neighborhood concepts make it about as easy as can be. Though the Carnival ships were still easy enough I guess as long as you don't mind walking up and down stairs in the atrium because you went to the wrong deck. I have memories of some of my first cruises 20 years ago and I remember those older ships being very complicated to find everything. Maybe I was just younger and more inexperienced or maybe the new ships are easier to navigate. I don't really know.

Carnival are building 2 mega ships. LNG class on order. First one due in 2022. Larger than oasis class.

I think you mean larger than Dream class.

I'm using your own comment. You said you wouldn't sail on a bigger ship because you don't use the rock wall and flowrider, why would you do these things when you can just do them in port? You said it's all about getting to the destination. But then you don't hold Carnival to the same standard? You don't see how your comment comes off as a bit hard to grasp? If your reason is a rock wall simply because you can apparently go rock climbing in a port.... why don't you apply that to Carnival with a basketball court and minigolf? You aren't consistent at all and make no sense.

We have not experienced Royal yet. Our booking style is to look for the ship that fits our wants (timing, embarkation port, itinerary, etc) for a price we are willing to pay (budget has varied significantly base on the vacation). Very rarely has Royal made it into our top 5 ships and when it has the price difference with the other ships we were looking at made hard to justify choosing them. Someday we will I am sure.

I am currently researching cruises for on our 30th anniversary next year. Right now I have 3 on my short list based mostly on itineraries and timing. They are CCL Conquest, NCL Breakaway, and RCI Allure. They are all different embarkation ports, itineraries, and length of cruise so it is hard to compare them side by side. The are all Balconies with Ocean Views. In my mind NCL Breakaway currently has the edge due mainly to it being 11 nights and the itinerary. It is the most expensive on my list in a pp/pd breakdown...but it is our 30th anniversary so I am willing to splurge a little.

TBH the Royal mega ships haven't appealed to either DH or myself that much when compared to the other ships on our short lists in the past. I like knowing I am on ship, with the feel, sight, and sound of the ocean. I don't see that much of that in this neighborhood concept of Royals. I could be wrong and we will probably find out someday when we try them. DH not only prefers smaller ships for their layout but he also doesn't like all the walking involved in the mega-ships. The only Mega ship we have sailed on so far was NCL Epic. While he loved the entertainment and venue options he didn't like the sheer size of the ship and what it took to get from one side to the other. We will be sailing on NCL Escape in September and CCL Fantasy in October. Our compromises to each other. I expect we will both have a blast on both cruises.

Very cool! I finally booked NCL (my first) next year. We are doing Escape. I can't wait to try a new ship as I'm in the "enjoy something new" camp.

Your concerns about Oasis are probably the biggest reason why some don't like it. Notably many of the public spaces do not have a lot of ocean views (or any at all). I wouldn't let that stop you from trying it, you'll still enjoy Allure, but you may find it's not your preference long term. We get an ocean balcony so I get plenty of ocean views. The pool decks, buffet, sports area, boardwalk, and especially the solarium has outstanding ocean views. The bars/restaurants/casino on the interior areas have basically no view of the ocean at all.

Your comment about the walking was kind of funny. I'm taking my mother on Harmony in October and she was worried about all the walking. We just had this conversation yesterday. She has been on smaller ships. Most cruise ships seem to be in the 1000' length range. Some slightly less, some a bit more like 1,200 feet. The bigger ships are generally just taller and wider. On a ship like Oasis, unless you are going to the boardwalk or sports zone (the aft neighborhoods), the general "length" of the ship you would be walking during your normal walks out and about is actually similar to a ship like Conquest. I didn't find myself feeling like I'm walking any more on the megaship vs the smaller ships.

I find it interesting that DH found Epic "too big" and took longer to walk from one side to the other. I'm wondering if it was more of an illusion and mental thing? Convince yourself the ship is so much bigger so those long walks down the hallways "feels" longer? The ship is only 100' longer than Conquest which isn't all that much distance in practical terms.

Im sure you remember back about 2008, there was a whole group of Oasis haters on the RC forum called NOOTS. It stood for Never Oasis Of The Seas or something like that. They had all these preconceived notions just like people do here about how bad Oasis class would suck, how its an amusement park at sea blah blah blah. It should really come as no surprise that people who love Carnival would be the same way.

Strangely enough about 100% of the NOOTS group has since sailed Oasis class and decided its the best since sliced bread. The group is no longer. People just love to knock stuff before they try it. One thing is for sure, about the ONLY person I know of that has actually sailed the Oasis class and didnt like it is Jimbo :D

At one point in time, the Sovereign class was considered a mega ship. Times are changing. There is no money to be made in building smaller ships. Carnival will either get on board or get left behind. My next cruise will be on Oasis out of PC. She is finally affordable and Ive been wanting to get on one of those ships since the first time I saw the artist rendition

Nicely said. You are a much better writer than I am :p

NOOTS is before my time but I have heard of them. And you are right, it's noticeable that they are all gone now as their preconceived notions about the ships ended up being without merit. Sovereign was the biggest ship in the world when it came out. I'm sure there were plenty of "who would want to sail on that mega mall!!!" people then, too. And that's why I find it funny when people sailing on massive 130,000GT malls at sea use the "mall at sea" excuse for Oasis not appealing to them.

I'm in the "Love all ships" category. I love my wave runner, I love my 25 ft boat, I love 110,000GT ships and I love 225,000GT ships. I have my preferences, but I still appreciate all for what they are. But there is a difference when people use incoherent reasons to dislike something for the sake of disliking something, and they come off as NOOTS

My family and I have sailed both Royal and Carnival. In my opinion, each ship was enjoyable and there was not one I didn't love. Hey, I'm on a cruise where it is warm! Anyway, for us, a family of 5, it comes down to price. I cruise mostly with Carnival because the price is less when I can go. I would love to try the Royal mega ships but, they are not in my price range when I can go. I truly enjoy the ship and many times don't get off unless there is a close beach. You can find just as much to do on Carnival as you can on Royal. The fanciness on some Royal ships increases the price. Alas, when I'm only paying for two, I will try the mega ships of Royal. Until then, Carnival can keep their ships and prices smaller! [emoji4]

The Dream class is every bit the "amusement park at sea" that Oasis is. Just in a more cramped and crowded setting. Im in the love all ships category too :)

No, they're not. They are significantly smaller. By about 45,000 tons.

I think they might hold more people though, or about the same amount. Not saying that's a good thing though. More people on a smaller ship.

Keep checking prices. The last time I checked, I could get a oceanview cabin on Oasis for the same price as an inside on Magic for my upcoming cruise. Magic has went up 50% since we booked last May while on Magic.

I think if you look at my comments, my supposed "belittling remarks" are very much geared towards people who make snotty, ridiculous comments to begin with. And you will notice that these same people have never actually been on these ships but have obnoxious comments that come off as totally irrational. And I just chime in accordingly :)

I think you should give Oasis class a try. Only sad and miserable people that want attention on the forum don't have a good time on Oasis class. (don't confuse that with simply preferring something else).

Usually they are just expressing their opinion and their preference and no matter what that is based on (or how much sense it makes or doesn't make to anyone else) it's still their preference and their opinion. You say that people are free to do what they want, then belittle them for their choice, which is a big difference. You are almost acting like their opinion, which is obviously contrary to yours, is a personal affront to you.

If the pricing and timing are right I would love to give Oasis a try.

I liked Escape more then Epic (and more then Breakaway, though they're similar really. Escape is just a larger version of Breakaway with a few more things on it). I thought the crew on it were wonderful, and did a lot for us. Epic was probably the smokiest ship I've been on, due to the casino running down most of one deck with the open air atriums. Escape/Breakaway has a similar thing, but either there were less smokers, or they did a better job with it. Make sure to do the Brat Pack show, it was a lot of fun. (The After Midnight..well..you really need to like Cotton Club type music. It was enjoyable for about 30-45 minutes and then we couldn't wait for it to end).

We had a lousy time on the Fantasy, might be our worst cruise. It was unusual for a Carnival cruise in that there just wasn't much to do, lacked the activities you normally see, food was not that great. I call that a 1-off bad cruise not a Carnival thing. Hopefully they've changed things around a little in the past year.

As for the others, Oasis class (and Disney Dream class) are probably my two favorites in terms of ship classes, but it's hard to beat an11-night cruise over a 7-night :) If it's in colder seasons, realize the first and last day you might not get much outdoor time, but still things to do.

For my upcoming cruise in October, Oasis is cheaper. Quiet a bit in fact, on inside and oceanview and balcony.

Carnival Magic Interior: 814.00 pp Oceanview: 929.00, Balcony: 1114.00, Suite: 1559.00

Oasis of the Seas Interior: 679.00, Oceanview; 829.00, Balcony: 939.00, Suite: 1669.00.

Magic is a great ship but those prices are absurd. We booked in at 539.00 pp for a Lido 4J

I would get a balcony if they can. They're usually not that much more on Oasis class ships (since there are so many balconies and not many OV's) Especially for those who might worry about the lack of ocean views from the public spaces (which is generally true, outside of the upper decks and back of boardwalk area).

Im sure that 939.00 pp is for a neighborhood balcony but even though I havent checked, I doubt their oceanview balconies are as expensive as on Magic.

Too bad we can't sail in October;). As I said up thread I priced Oasis against Dream for 4/19 just for grins (I am ready to book my 2019 cruise but need to see if I can figure out my school schedule that far ahead since I start grad school in September) and Oasis was only $500 more than the Dream, so if I were booking a cruise it would certainly be in the discussion (and the $500 difference is between a cove on Dream and mid-ship ocean view on Oasis). One of the reasons that we like to cruise is to see the ocean so it is a factor.

All I can say is I want my cruise to feel like a cruise. If I wanted an all inclusive resort... I would go to an all inclusive resort. I want it to be a boat, and feel like a boat.

Amen to this! Where is the like button when you need one!

Only if you tend to be confused like yourself. Why don't you stick to vacationing how you like and don't worry about how I like to vacation. I said me personally you do you Boo and I will continue to do me. If you like sailing on Behemoth's of the seas go right ahead. I myself have zero interest in doing so and never will sail on a ship that Large. I also must have missed the part where I mentioned Mini Golf & Basketball because I don't wish to do those on board a ship either. Apparently you have nothing better to do other than making assumptions about others. You do know what they say about Assuming? you must never Ass-u-me.
