Just Off Norwegian Escape -- I'll Take an Obnoxious Cruise Director for $1000, Alex

Whom have I disrespected? Is it somehow disrespectful to give information? Give me an example of a "snide undertone" from one of my posts.

Then give an example of how it should have been worded.

I don't see how a copy/paste of NCL policy that directly addresses the subject is snide in any way. If anything, it is direct and not indirect.

If you are honestly just trying to be helpful and not a "know-it-all", your delivery needs work. :) The way the discussion read, the OP had already shared the info (to unknowing folks) that there was a corkage fee. Obviously, they didn't know before they cruised, so were just sharing what they'd learned to help others. (Also, I did not take it as if they were complaining.) You then felt compelled to reiterate what they already shared and implied that they should have known before they sailed. How exactly does that help anyone? Readers already knew about the corkage fee from the OP's tip, and the OP has already sailed and learned first hand. So all your scolding and copying and pasting comes across as unnecessary and rude.

Not saying you intended to be rude, but just letting you know how and why you are being perceived as disrespectful. Since you asked.

On topic, thanks to the OP for a great, balanced review! :)

I would have to say "less than 20 minutes" is a fair allowance of time. It doesn't take an hour to go to the bar or to the rest room.
The NCL dailies state that the items can be there for up to 1 hour. Just arbitrarily deciding "less than 20 minutes..." might as well be 5 minutes. It isn't up to the guest to decide NCL policy.

1. It was Sauer-kraut who mentioned the corkage fee, not me.

How exactly does that help anyone? Readers already knew about the corkage fee from the OP's tip, and the OP has already sailed and learned first hand.
The tip that was given (from Sauer-kraut) was that it is easier the bring wine in a carry-on as opposed to putting it in a suitcase, having it found, and being called down to retrieve it. That is the advice that the OP and others may not have known.

So all your scolding and copying and pasting comes across as unnecessary and rude.
The copy/paste was a reply to a post that claimed that the policy was vague and didn't state that NCL would hold the wine until the fee was paid. Neither is true and the copy/paste proved that.

Not saying you intended to be rude, but just letting you know how and why you are being perceived as disrespectful. Since you asked.
As you can see, the "corkage fee" post (not by me) was not scolding. It was helpful advice for the OP and others. Carry-on and check wine while boarding. Pay the fee then. The policy isn't vague which the copy/paste proves and clearly helps to inform. People are claiming that they are being "disrespected" when they are just proven to be incorrect.

Thanks for your honest review!

Having had the same situation happem to me on POA with the bottled water I was equally disgusted!! If I am buying overpriced water on NCL for an excursion and then dont drink it, I think it is pathetic I cannot bring back onboard. Put a stupid sticker on It or something. That is the nickel and diming thatvis obnoxious IMO

Thanks

IMO (just an opinion....not to offend anyone), is that a sticker wouldn't work. Someone could still dump the water and fill it with vodka before returning to the ship (see THIS POST from bluesea777)

I think they meant unopened bottles.

Which would still need to be inspected. Part of the reason (whether true or not) that NCL came up with the policy (during embarkation) was that bottled water (even in cases) needed to be inspected. NCL doesn't want to be bothered inspecting water bottles or other beverages....so NCL doesn't allow them to be brought on-board.

I think the bottom line is that it is considerate to remember that while folks like us spend a lot of time on cruise forums (and cruise frequently), that many, many people do not. There are CC members who can tell you date & time that certain policies were instituted and that's great - but not everyone going on a cruise vacation gets that into the details. I'm a frequent and long-time cruiser, so I have been there through lots of NCL policy changes, etc., but I have only been to a land "all-inclusive" once. I have to say that before I went I did not scour the resort website and read all the terms and conditions for every little thing (not that this is a good thing LOL), however if I posted a review with a few tips about (new to me) policies and a bunch of frequent guests chimed in with "well, that is CLEARLY outlined in the Terms & Conditions, Section 3, paragraph 2!!!".....well, I would feel scolded.

Your cruising knowledge is appreciated! It's just your delivery could be a bit softer, that's all. ;)

You giving tips would be fine. The issue (in this case) is when someone mentions that they didn't like how something was handled and someone else replies that it would have been easier to....(insert tip) or states why it was handled in that way.

In the following fictitious scenario.....

"OMG, the people at Port of Miami made me throw away an entire case of water before I could board the ship. When I sailed Epic last year from Port Canaveral, I put a luggage tag on my water and it was delivered to my stateroom by 2pm. Those Miami people are so rude!!"

...if someone replied with what the policy is and when it changed (copy/paste the policy), that wouldn't be scolding nor rude. It would be informative. The person who posted the review has no reason to feel insulted nor scolded.

Who fills in while Tyler is on vacation?

I'm not up on my NCL cruise directors, but I think he said it was Andre? Apparently the same person filled in for him last time he went on vacation. And Paquito was just promoted to CD, but I don't remember which ship he was going to!

And if this is the reason, I don't blame them. It would be a pain in the you know what, to inspect bottle after bottle.

So here is my review of our cruise on the Norwegian Escape -- departing Miami on August 19. We were originally scheduled to enjoy a Western Caribbean cruise (Cozumel, Belize, Roatan) but because of Hurricane Harvey, we were rerouted to St. Maarten, St. Thomas, and Nassau. You could hear a collective sigh of disappointment from the Garden Cafe since most people had already traveled to those ports and were looking for something different (including me), but it was an enjoyable cruise -- with perfect weather -- nonetheless.

I traveled with my husband and his parents -- it was their first cruise ever and their first time ever seeing the ocean. (They live in Wisconsin and had never traveled to the sea before.)

Here's a recap of things we loved and didn't like so much:

We loved the food on the ship. We enjoyed a few specialty dinners: La Cucina (awesome food except for the osso bucco), Le Bistro (sooooo much better on the Escape than on other NCCL ships), and Cagney's (phenomenal, but way too much food. No lobster available, but tasty shrimp.) We also enjoyed lunch at Food Republic, which was top-notch and amazingly fresh. We looooooved the atmosphere and the cuisine.

The service at each of these restaurants was friendly, professional, and attentive. In fact, the service at every venue, including the bars and Garden Cafe, was impressive. I must say that we didn't really care for the dinner at O'Sheehan's....there really wasn't anything wrong with the food (and the server was super sweet and friendly) but it wasn't as exciting as food in the specialty restaurants. Taste and Savor were very good with plenty of options!

We loved our balcony staterooms on the 10th floor. My in-laws had a spacious handicapped suite, which offered plenty of room and many handicap-accessible amenities, including bars on the balcony and the shower. Our stateroom attendants, Yenni and Alma, were friendly, personable, and very attentive.

We hated (is that too strong of a word?) the obnoxiousness of some of the passengers. Some people were simply rude and just trashy. I thought it was very nervy of people to "reserve" lounge chairs in Spice H20 around 7:40 am with their towels and then take off for breakfast and who knows what else for the next three hours. Oh, I'm sorry. You were upset that I had removed the towels and placed them on the railing so a couple who actually wanted to lay out in the sun could use chairs instead? We were so amazed by the level of entitlement exhibited by some people!!

We hated (I can definitely use the word here) the elevator situation. Elevators are small and a bit claustrophobic....the worse part was that the elevator banks operate independently, so passengers would press buttons on both sides of the elevators (to double their chances of getting one). This would mean elevators would constantly stop at floors where the passengers had already taken the elevator on the other side.

We really liked the Meet and Greet organized through Cruise Critic. It was held in the brewhouse, and the staff offered us tasty appetizers and flights of different beers. We were introduced to a few crew members (not the captain) and the organizers (not the cruise ship) gave out a few raffle items they had purchased themselves. I do prefer the Meet and Greets on RCCL since the raffle prizes include specialty dinners, bottles of wine, and cruise paraphernalia. After the Meet and Greet, a group of 29 of us did the Slot Pull. The machine sucked (we each chipped in $15 and walked away with $10) but it was fun.

We decided not to partake in any excursion offered by the cruise ship, mostly because my father-in-law would need to use a wheelchair and we would not want to slow down other passengers.

--On St. Maarten, we took a taxi to the Westin at Dawn Beach and spent the day at the resort. $7 per person to the beach in an air-conditioned van. The best part was the Westin gave us a beautiful day room, so after spending time at the beach, we were able to take showers and freshen up before returning to the ship. We decided not to go to Philipsburg since the port area had plenty of shops.

--In St. Thomas, we simply walked around the port area since it was super hot that day...plenty of shops to explore in the port area.

--In Nassau, we took a cab to Atlantis so my in-laws could spend a little time at the casino. $4 per person each way...we were in a van with about 5 other people. Atlantis is definitely looking tired, and there was a lot of construction (and a heck of a lot of people) around, so we didn't stay too long. We walked around downtown Nassau for a bit....we returned to Greek Islands Restaurant for a Kalik and the best conch fritters in town.

We loved the Spice H20 area and the Grotto, which was pretty empty for the first few hours every morning. The Grotto was really refreshing after laying out in the sun all morning, but the pool attendants should be a bit more vigilant about not allowing people to go into the area with glass bottles. We wished the Escape would play a movie or something on the wide screen, but the "serenity show" was peaceful and relaxing.

We really liked the Broadway-style show After Midnight. (Damn, some of those women have amazingly powerful voices!) We did not go to the Brat Pack show after seeing a preview of it on TV -- the acting seemed pretty terrible, so we passed on that show. The magician was entertaining but nothing spectacular, and the Howl at the Moon dueling banjos was enjoyable.

We were appalled by the attitude of the cruise directly, Tyler....he was so obnoxious and inappropriate that we felt so uncomfortable. He is the type of guy who thinks he is being funny, but he's not. We thought he was so rude to the elderly couple at the Love and Marriage game that we felt genuinely sorry for them. He is by far the worst cruise director that we had encountered, and when we saw him start another activity, we decided not to watch and moved on to something else.

We found embarkation and debarkation to go very smoothly...we decided to take advantage of transfers to the Fort Lauderdale airport. We left the ship around 8:15 am and we were on the bus and off within a half hour.

Here are a few pointers to keep in mind!

1. A little extra tip for the stateroom attendant goes a long way. We gave $20 to our stateroom attendant in advance, and she gave us robes and extra special attention.

2. We brought a $100 bottle of wine on board to celebrate my in-law's 50th anniversary. It was taken out of our suitcase and we had to pay the $15 corkage fee to have it returned.

3. We thought it was rude for the cruise staff to berate us for bringing the bottles of Aquafina water back on board the ship after we had PURCHASED them on board but did not finish them when we went off the ship in St. Maarten. It's water that we paid for!

4. We felt the Art Auction was run like a scam. The auctioneer was obnoxious, and if I never see another Peter Max painting in my life, I will be happy. The auctioneer would offer a painting for a very cheap price and THEN say there are four or five other paintings in the series, so the person who wanted one painting could no longer purchase it unless he bought the entire series. There were many angry people, and we were so turned off, we left after 15 minutes. I will agree about the elevators. from what we have heard they are just like the Breakaway and the Epic or iReh

5. We bought a $10 bracelet from the sale in the promenade for my mother-in-law. During dinner, as she was simply sitting at La Cucina, the pin came off and it fell apart. Fortunately, we returned it and our money was refunded.

6. The ropes course on the Escape was MUCH more challenging than the one on the Breakaway. We thought my mother-in-law would be able to do it, but she would not be able to get past the first obstacle. We were very glad that we tried it, however!

Hope you enjoy your cruise!! Washy washy!

Now you posted a objective and informative type of review. Too bad we don't see more like this. From what we have heard the elevators are about like the Breakaway and Epic: yes, a real pain in the butt. I too hate when people hog chairs and lounges regardless where they are. As for cruise directors, thank goodness they rarely make or break a cruise. It seems like lately we have either had crappy ones that are disgusting or ones with less personality than the spider I flushed down the toilet this morning.

I know what you mean about O'Sheehan's but it still serves a good purpose. It is just plain ole fast food and great when in a hurry, plus we do like the wings and usually the fish and chips. We have not found the wait staff very friendly at all at O'Sheehan;s but we still manage to grab a bite 2 or 3 times while on any NCL ship.

Two Wheels answered my question and quoted the policy to my question and it was appreciated because I apparently mid-read it when I looked it up myself. It was very helpful to a first timer and his knowledge was appreciated.. not taken as rude

We cruised the week after you and also found the restaurant O'Sheehans to be quite lacking in both menu and service... interesting...

We were also impressed with the food at the venues we visited! the food actually had "taste and flavor" ? I don't know how to describe it but I think the chefs on this ship did a great job. I tried 2 different steak dinners at The Supper Club & Taste and TASTE won our favorite dinner for the week!

You'd didn't miss anything by skipping Brat Pack. John Hughes would have rolled in his grave.

My husband attended half of the show, he left because of the ridiculousness of the language, locker room underwear scene etc... ugh... why??? the show did state 16+ but come on...

Welcome home. Love the title of your post ! Thanks for taking the time to write a fair and honest review. How much was the Westin at Dawn Beach P.P ?

We book the Westin through resortforaday.com...it was $219 for up to four people, and that included the wonderful hotel room for our use, which was perfect to shower before heading back to the boat. Of course, I wonder what the Westin looks like now after the hurricane!

"We brought a $100 bottle of wine on board to celebrate my in-law's 50th anniversary. It was taken out of our suitcase and we had to pay the $15 corkage fee to have it returned." This was a "TIP" not a complaint.

Yes, we were not complaining about paying the corkage fee...and we were not trying to sneak it in through our checked luggage. (Obviously, we could not carry it with us in our carry-ons on the plane and there was no time to rearrange luggage at the port.) Thanks for acknowledging this, uneamie! I that that other poster's comment was indeed snarky.

Hi mmmmbacon. Thanks for the review. Can you tell me more about transfers to the Fort Lauderdale airport?

We took a Lyft from FLL to the cruise port. It was about $60 for the four of us. We needed a larger vehicle to transport my father-in-law, who was in a wheelchair.

We purchased transfers from the cruise line back to FLL....we had a flight around noon, so we opted for the first wave of transfers off the ship, which was at 8:45. We actually left the ship around 8:15 and we were on a bus that left promptly around 8:45 (after retrieving luggage and going through customs).

Handicapped cabin question. Did you in-laws cabin have a sofa in their room or was it a table and chairs? I am disabled and sailing on an AFT balcony and I am very curious about the inside cabin itself.

Thank you so much for posting a great review - much appreciated.

There was no sofa in the handicapped room. That was taken out to provide more floor space so a wheelchair can turn around easily. There was indeed plenty of extra space, especially on the balcony. There was a chair by the "desk" area and I believe another one by the window.

are you referring to OP Tip #1 ?

1. A little extra tip for the stateroom attendant goes a long way. We gave $20 to our stateroom attendant in advance, and she gave us robes and extra special attention.

Since when did tipping become a bribe ? Do you bribe your server at your favorite restaurant ?

The $20 was an added gesture, not a bribe....some people give a little more gratuity to their cabin attendants at the end of the trip. We give it at the beginning and we tell them that we appreciate the hard work they do for us. And yes, I have done that to a server at a restaurant who I know is going to take care of us (and then even more if the service is exceptional.) Kindness goes a long way.

mmmmbacon, thanks for the review!

The Westin and Dawn Beach looks really nice!

Question: About how long was the taxi ride to Dawn Beach? Any problem getting a taxi on the return trip?

The ride to/from Dawn Beach was $6 per person. There were taxis waiting at the Westin to take us back.

We had never seen so many people walk out of a show because of the cruise director. As we were leaving early, other people were saying "He's so rude" and "What a joke" and other profanity-laced comments. Tyler was beyond obnoxious...he was trying to be funny, but I don't appreciate humor that makes other people (especially the contestants in the game show) to feel uncomfortable. Tyler is like the class clown who never grew up but worse. I would seriously consider calling the cruise line in advance and asking if he were going to be the cruise director on my next cruise. I would definitely change ships because of him.

Ha! Same. I didn't call NCL but I asked around here and on FB to make sure he wasn't going to be the cd on my upcoming cruise for the same reason.

Isn't it interesting how we all can experience the same cruise director doing the same things and have totally different reactions? I guess it's the same reason we all don't love Taylor Swift or the comedy of Jim Carey.

What's "tacky" to some equals "life of the party" to others. Cruise directors come and go, so I rarely sweat it. They can definitely help make a cruise for me, but they really don't break it. It IS interesting that some of the most obnoxious cruise directors are very nice and reasonably mellow if you get them one:one.
