Christmas Cruise Decorations FYI...

We have sailed a few Christmas cruises and people always say to me that they wish they knew about decorating before they left.

So here are some tips for the Holiday cruisers:

A:

You can bring battery operated lights or a battery operated small tree - we leave ours on the entire cruise and never go thru more than one set of batteries. This is especially great when you are in an inside room.

B:

We go to dollar store and buy garland and a few packages of snowflake glitter ornaments. We hang them from the ceiling in the room. Instant Christmas.

C:

Door decorating is BIG on a holiday cruise. People bring wall decals, garland other decorations for their door. It is great to walk down the hallway and see so much spirit. Just don't put anything on your door that you are not ok with losing - there are some Grinches on board that steal things from our door. Last year we lost about 1/2 of our decorations throughout the cruise.

D:

Gifts for stateroom attendant. This is a hot topic as many feel like the tip is all they want. I disagree. Each cruise we have been on we have given a small wrapped token to our stateroom person with a handwritten card on Christmas morning - and that is really the only gift they get - so they seem quite appreciative. We keep it politically correct - so we just say happy holidays. Each time the crew person reacts very strongly and unless they are great actors- I believe they are touched by the thought.

We also tip well at the beginning and end of the sail so that helps too.

I hope you enjoy your holiday sail as much as we do.

What is a Xmas tree?

It is what was previously a flourishing living plant growing in a natural setting and providing mankind with a supply of oxygen, helping keep the environment clean and providing natural beauty...which someone has felt enabled to chop down, kill and drag inside a structure such as a human domicile and to string with badly-wired series lighting inviting short circuiting and electrical sparking which produces an average of 260 home fires, 13 deaths and 24 injuries and $16.4 million in property damage in the US alone each year...

It has no real religious significance nor practical benefit...

do all the ships decorate for Christmas by Thanksgiving night? this will be our first cruise this late in the year

Our experience has been that they start decorating on the day after Thanksgiving, and it takes a few days to complete the decorations.

Generally one of the first decorations is a very tall Christmas tree in the Centrum on "Black Friday." It is so warm and pleasant to sit in the R-Bar and have a pre-dinner cocktail (or two, you are on a cruise!), while enjoying the first tree of the season. Our first cruise ever was a Christmas cruise on Brilliance and we sailed her last Thanksgiving and will be on her again this year
