What is the appeal of sea days?

You should avoid a back to back Cruise.

They offer no discount and the same shows and activities are repeated.

Try a different ship sailing from the same port or a nearby port. Even a different Cruise line.

Great advice, they may also do different ports, even in the same island i.e Palermo vs Catania or Messina on Sicily, Italy.

I'm not the type that likes a lot of sea days, but I do appreciate the occasional "forced relaxation" day -- the cruises I take tend to be very port-intensive and a sea day every so often is a chance to slow down and recharge the batteries.

I'm not sure I'd ever do well on a trans-Atlantic, but I am in favor of one sea day for every 3-4 port days.

We've already been on a few back to back cruises and enjoy them a lot. Ive found that the evening entertainment from week to week is different as far as the comedians, variety shows, etc. It's just the day time stuff that is the same week after week, year after year. While there isn't a discount for the cruise itself, we do save money on transportation costs. But you're right, sailing a different cruiseline the second week would change things up.

The guest performers may change, but the main 3-4 shows are repeated every Cruise for years. Also, the day activities and dining menus are repeated
