jamessemaj Posted September 21, 2017 #26 Share Posted September 21, 2017 I had not thought of the mangling of baggage by airlines. I would do it to prevent mangled bags which always occur.
Crusin6 Posted September 21, 2017 #27 Share Posted September 21, 2017 Protects the luggage and contents within from spills, dirt, torn off zippers, etc. And from being opened and picked through by baggage handlers And it insures that nobody puts contraband in your suitcase. This is a particularly serious problem btw...as you are responsible for anything found in your luggage regardless of how it got there Of course this issue is of more concern to some travelers than to others but if you look at the travelers who are lugging wrapped luggage up to the counter you might be able to figure out why they are wrapping it up Some airports worldwide are more notorious than others Doesn't take a genius to figure this out Sent from my iPad using Forums
kitty9 Posted September 23, 2017 #28 Share Posted September 23, 2017 We ship our luggage to the port for every cruise, and UPS is terrible with ruining bags. But since we started to shrink wrap our bags, we've not had any damage or filthy bags.

SRF Posted September 23, 2017 #30 Share Posted September 23, 2017 When we fly international out of SfO we always have our luggage wrapped not problem... arrives just has had it done Correlation does not imply causality. I fly a lot with unwrapped luggage, and it arrives as it left. I have also seen wrapped luggage coming onto the baggage carousel totally messed up. Oh, and once you get to your room, how to you open your bag? Especially these days where you cannot bring a knife in your carry on, it is wrapped up in your luggage. :)

TiiiSailor Posted September 23, 2017 #32 Share Posted September 23, 2017 You see this in most European, Middle Eastern, and South American airports. Everyone I saw had a sign saying if TSA (or the local equivalent) removes the wrap for a security check, the original wrappers will rewrap the baggage. The reason everyone I talked to about having the wrapping done gave the same answer - pilferage once the bag is out of their sight.
Rare electro Posted September 23, 2017 #33 Share Posted September 23, 2017 Went to Italy for Christmas last year and my luggage didn't make it. Had to buy luggage there to bring back the clothes I had to buy. Didn't want to buy expensive luggage as I already have good luggage so bought a cheap suitcase and had it wrapped to keep it from falling apart on the trip home. So sorry your luggage was lost. This is always my fear so that's why I travel with at least 7 days worth of simple outfits in my 21 inch carry on Simple tops and bottoms underware extra shoes and a sleep shirt Sent from my iPad using Forums
