DamWamWeRCruising Posted October 15, 2017 #1 Share Posted October 15, 2017 We haven't cruised NCL in a few years and was wondering if you can go right to your cabin upon boarding. On recent cruises "on other lines" the cabins were sealed off until an announcement was made. A group of 26 are on the Breakaway in November and we have mixed information regarding getting to your cabin upon boarding. Can you drop off your belongings even if the cabin is not ready? Rare BirdTravels Posted October 15, 2017 #2 Share Posted October 15, 2017 Cabins are available between 1:00 and 1:30. The ship kindly requests that you do NOT go to your cabins until invited by the cruise director around 1:30. Ignore bad advice to ignore the ship’s request and just go to your room. Wait until you are invited.
ssalaam85 Posted October 15, 2017 #3 Share Posted October 15, 2017 On the breakaway last December we went to our cabin around 12pm and asked the steward if we could drop of our carryon bags and it was ok but I guess it depends. roger001 Posted October 15, 2017 #4 Share Posted October 15, 2017 The last few cruises we've been on, the cabin corridor doors have been closed until all the rooms were ready. That has usually been 1:30 or so.
Zenica Posted October 15, 2017 #5 Share Posted October 15, 2017 Does this apply to Haven suites as well? So what are you to do with all of your luggage? Managing luggage and two small kids for a few hours sounds easier said than done and just adds to the very reason you take a vacation.....STRESS. I can't answer about the Haven but why not drop off your bags to be delivered to you room. Just keep a carryon for anything u may need before getting luggage. roger001 Posted October 15, 2017 #7 Share Posted October 15, 2017 I'm thinking suite guests can be escorted to room for luggage drop off. Also, haven't used this in a long time, but their is usually an area to place you luggage after boarding until room are available. Just ask as you board, or if suite just ask concierge what to do. Bootman4U Posted October 15, 2017 #8 Share Posted October 15, 2017 The Haven concierge will advise you. Last time we cruised in The Haven on the Getaway we got on and took our bags to the room and dropped them off without problems.
mjkacmom Posted October 15, 2017 #9 Share Posted October 15, 2017 How much stuff are you carrying on? I have 5 kids, I have 1 carryon for all of us.
Rare mking8288 Posted October 15, 2017 #10 Share Posted October 15, 2017 Unlike the "smaller" Gem sailing out of NYC, the Breakaway - AFAIK - does NOT have an area dedicated or setup to hold those "carry-on" bags that tons of folks seemed to embark on ... Thus, lots of folks hauling oversized bags all over the ship, including the packed elevators & into the buffet (which we avoid on that morning.) We always checked our heavier bags and strolled onto the gangways with a lighter backpack & Mrs. M's small cabin tote. I recalled once, we're able to dropped off our coats in our stateroom (over PA announcement) with the understanding that crew are still busy with turnaround & rooms aren't fully ready ... thus, not to get into Room Stewards' way. All the staterooms were given the "ready" status just after 1 PM as we're coming out of Taste after our sit-down lunch.

If i recall correctly, when we were in the Aft Suite we were directed to enjoy our lunch in the Haven courtyard until the rooms were available. When we were in the Havev proper, we were able to go to the suite as soon as the concierge introduction was completed.

Zenica Posted October 15, 2017 #13 Share Posted October 15, 2017 I think I am beginning to understand, so not unlike flying, the cruise line takes your "checked" baggage and as you wait for your cabin to be ready, your only walking around with which ever "carry on" that you elected to. You could just "check" everything? and have all of it delivered to your cabin? or do you go to a central area to recover your luggage once cabins are ready and they've scanned them to their satisfaction? Disney323 Posted October 15, 2017 #14 Share Posted October 15, 2017 We just got back today from the Breakaway and we were in a Haven suite. When you arrive at the Cruise port, they will take your bags from you and you will not see them again until later. We were able to board at 11:30a.m. and our room was ready upon arrival. Our luggage arrived around 1pm. Our "carry on" baggage was a simple cinch sack and a small rolling suitcase.

It’s exactly like curbchecking luggage at airports, a couple of bucks per bag for the porter, then head for security.

When DW and I were on the Epic, after we were given the Haven tour, we were invited to go drop off our carryons in the room. Couldn’t stay, but were definitely allowed to drop off. Also, being Haven your checked bags will receive priority. We had ours by the time the room was ready for us to occupy. EDIT: Checked bags are delivered to your room. We did not. We boarded about 11:30 and it was at least an hour or so, maybe longer before we could get into our cabin even to drop something off. We just headed to O'Sheehans as it was on the desk as we entered. We had a fun lunch with our traveling partners and enjoyed a couple of drinks while we waited. Sure, the room steward trying to make an impression on you for a big tip is not going to tell you on Day 1 “Dude, stop breaking the rules and take your hand carry with you, you’re getting in the way and slowing things down for all your fellow passengers”. I hope you left your steward with a big tip at the end of the cruise for accommodating you breaking the rules.
