You do not get charged a fee in the casino if you upload credits to your cruise card for use in the machines. If you go to the cashier cage to obtain cash off your cruise card, there is a fee. So simply go to a machine, set up your access, upload $XXX to your card, take the card to the cage, and cash out balance.

Take care.

The last few years I have given my cruise card to the pit boss for chips and have not been charged any fee.

I am considering putting cash on my account for casino credit and putting extra just to have cash available if needed during the cruise (instead of hauling a bunch of cash with me) - is this a good way to keep cash handy? Yes, I will have multiple CCs and my debit card (which was once compromised literally the second I put it in a cruise port ATM - I got a text like 10 minutes later lol). I find I need a lot of cash (specially small bills) for shopping at ports.

Princess does not assess a convenience fee if you perform a Room Charge for credit at a slot machine or at a table game, unlike some of the other lines.

However, they do assess a fee for credit card cash advances performed with their cashiers.

Because Princess doesn't charge that fee, some people feel it's perfectly acceptable to use the casino as a free ATM machine, following the steps described above. What the poster left out is the very next step, performed by the casino: your account is locked, preventing any further room charges.

When passengers use the casino as a free ATM they don't realize or don't care that the cruise line incurs an expense as those Casino Room Charges converted to cash are then paid by a credit card which deducts a fee as the credit card charge is processed.

So the next time you see another cutback at Princess in services or food... or you see a price increase, remember those people doing this who I feel are "cheats."

As for pre-purchasing credits, as the OP asked, in theory it can be done, but now must be done far in advance of the sailing date. I used to purchase credits as late as the day before the cruise. That changed somewhere at the beginning of 2015. The cut-off is either two weeks or two months before sailing.

Secondly, purchased casino credits, the last time I did so far in advance, are posted as credits to your room account, accessed by making a room charge in the casino either at a slot machine or at a table game. This means you are held to the room charge limits: $3,000/day and $21,000/cruise. This last time was on Coral Princess, April 2016. Other's have reported that on other ships even after that date, it wasn't handled that way.

Here are the item numbers from the website:

Casino Credit

Available in $25, $50 and $100 increments.

Item #6003 - $25.00

Item #6004 - $50.00

Item #6005 - $100.00

I agree you actually do need to play with the money at a machine or table before cashing out or they will lock you out and you will have to explain why you weren't playing. I had card issues one year and tried to insert the card into several different machines trying to play and they locked me, once I explained they unlocked me

There's a new slot in the slot machines and you put your Medallion in and press the buttons. If you are lucky you get it back. If you lose you have to go to passenger services desk and obtain a new one.

You can still purchase casino credits before the cruise. It is like sending yourself a gift. It's a way to get cash to the ship without carrying it. Load the cash to your cruise card on the ship at the casino and off you go to the gaming. Or take the vouchers and buy chips.

You don't really believe that a cutback in food is related to the casino "cheats" do you? :D

Works for us & I can't see the Medallions having any change in their accounting system.

I was wondering if you can still buy casino credits in advance of your cruise. If not can you buy onboard credits and use them in the casino without getting charged a fee

To answer directly, yes. Go to the cruise personlizer. Select Onboard Reservations. Scroll down to Casino Credits. Select the amounts you want.

They are related. Credit card expenses are administrative and a drag of profit. Anything to offset that, any cut helps to restore that.

Every time we travel I notify our bank of our travel plans and they note that on their computers and I have not had any issues using my debit card with ATM's. I do not know where you reside but it works for me in Canada.

I have done that on previous cruises however I tried to put on casino credits via the Personalizer many times well in advance of a cruise we did on the Royal in July and it would not let me.

I don't know if the problem is fixed now but I just took some extra $US and fed them into a slot machine which loaded the money on to my card.
