We are spending some time in Argentina and Brazil prior to our cruise next month.

Q: Is an electrical converter needed in either of these countries?

Larry

Read the fine print on your devices before you go. You will find many work on 100-240V, in which case you only need adapters. If you will be taking devices that can only use the US standard 110V, then you will need converters for those.

There are lots of different plugs down here from three small round ones in a row, two fatter round ones, three diagonal slots etc. Adapters are available everywhere as many things sold here come with the wrong plugs when you buy them. Many hotels will loan you an adapter if the room does not have the outlet you need.
