We have booked a Cuba cruise on the Serena. One of the ports is Key West. Where does Oceania usually dock in Key West?

Yup, A real pain in the you know what. Be nice to dock where you can walk. :(:(:(

True enough, but this is much more than a shopping town. Besides, the farther you walk on Duval Street away from Mallory Square, the more the shops turn from tee shirt shops to interesting galleries.

 

o Tours of Truman's Winter White House (Remarkably ordinary. Your grandmother probably owned similar black tin TV dinner tables)

 

o Tours of Hemingway's house (famous group of six-toed cats live here, descendants of Hemingway's pet)

 

o head to the southernmost point in the US for you picture taken with the marker

 

o another photo opportunity: the corner of Fleming and Whitehead Streets (a few blocks from the Truman White House) is a sign saying Mile 0 for US Route 1. US 1 ends almost 2500 miles north at the Canadian border in Maine. not much to look at but rather amazing to realize you're at the beginning of such a long road

 

o sunset at Mallory Square: street performers located all around the square; bars and, of course, fabulous sunsets

 

o Mel Fisher Maritime Museum: all the gold and jewelry recovered from the Fisher expeditions

Yes, O.K stuff, but not worth staying around for an other few hours to see it. Do not need to see where Truman played cards at night with his friends. Again, good for an hour or two.

Go to Blue Heaven restaurant and get a slice of Key Lime pie. Meringue about 8 inches high. Delicious. Great breakfast also if you're there at that time.

We docked at the Naval base. A trolley will take you to town, as you're not allowed to walk from the base. Key West is really pretty crappy. Years back it still was crappy, just not as bad as now. Place is starting to look more like a Hobo drop off. You'll see dozens of the same lame ass "T" shirt shops along Duval. Walk down Duval or take a trolley. Go to "Louie's Backyard" for a great lunch. As for Key Lime pie. Well, it's everywhere. Louie's has a great version. The tour guides will recommend "Kermit's". No better or worse than anywhere else. If you do go there, the Key Lime peanuts ARE very good. I'd recommend Hemingway's house for a tour. The other place is the Butterfly house at the end of Duval St. Near the "Southern most place in the Continental US post"

We enjoyed our visit to Key West as had been a number of years since our last visit. After docking at Mallory Square we wandered over to Duval and had a leisurely stroll taking in the sights to the end, then took a right to the Southernmost Point. We then spent an hour and a half at the The Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory. After that we worked our way back and found some interesting stores and galleries. One in particular was Archeo, which has some very nice modern and African Art. Finally, we ended up at Sloppy Joe’s where we had a nice lunch accompanied by live music. All in all it was a very enjoyable day.

No you cannot walkoff the Naval Base, (outer mole). You must use the provided transportation to get you into town. What you do from there is up to you. The shuttles will run continually while you are in port, back and forth.
