Cancellation and/or Switching out a passenger

Good Afternoon fellow carnival cruise travelers. I just got off the phone and I must say I am a little disappointed and a bit confused. Hopefully you all will be able to shed light.

I have two bookings, one for me and one for my teenage sons and my youngest sons best friend. There is a possibility my sons best friend may not be able to go. With that being a possibility I explored my options with Carnival. Here’s what I got:

Option A: cancel the booking for him, and I was given date ranges of how much the refund would be......everything over the $250 deposit, 50%, 25% and 0....again just based on when we did it.

Option B: find another friend that can take his place......NOW HERES THE KICKER and my frustration.....same rules apply as in option a and we would have to book that child based on the rates at that time.

So you mean to tell me you will charge me, depending on when this decision is made final, twice for the same bed and the only thing they have to do is change a name in the system??!!

I must say I am little baffled, I understand if I cancel, got it, but if I replace.....

Okay, I’m off my soapbox.

Anyone that has similar experiences I would appreciate your experience and/or know how.

Thanks for listening!

Did you book Early Saver? There are penalties involved with booking that rate. Technically, they do not allow "name changes" under Early Saver. It's a trade-off...pay their cheapest rate, but put up with some additional penalties.

We booked three cabins for two families. Two of the cabins were for us parents and one was for our kids (one is ours, three are theirs). About four months ago, they cancelled on us. We booked Early Saver, so since they don't allow name changes, we had to completely cancel our son's cabin even though he was staying in it. Plus we cancelled the other adult room. We had to pay the $50 cancellation fee for him (they had to pay their own $50/person fee). Then we had to re-book our son into the same cabin. And yes, we had to pay the current rate for that cabin, not the rate we paid a year ago...and it was more now. We told our PVP that we would be adding a friend to our son's cabin later. When that time came, technically the rate had again gone up (only $5), but our PVP just added the friend without any change to the price (except the taxes changed a bit).

When/if you find someone else to go, call back until you get a rep. willing to do a name change for a $50 fee.

Carnival breaks their own rules all the time.

Thank you, I will give this a try if the need arises......hopefully it will not though!

No we didn’t, our cabin is a Casino offer and my children’s cabin was some random promotion, but not early saver.

I am not sure if this will help, but we recently booked a 4 person inside on an early saver for my kids. My DH and I are across the hall in a balcony room.

At the time of booking, we were considering letting them each bring a friend, but had yet to decided for sure. When I called Carnival to book, the rep said that if I left the name of passenger 3 and 4 as TBD, we could add or change it at anytime without penalty. So if our kids bring friends, we would simply need to have the names added by the final payment date.

The rep also said that if we decide not to bring a 3rd and 4th passenger, that the deposit I paid for the TBD kids would be applied to the balance of the first 2 passengers. I did get her PVP number and name and am hoping I don't get screwed in the end! But she assured me I would not lose deposits on TBD passengers.

Another case of Carnival and varying rules. I was told once (before I got a PVP), that if I canceled my cruise my deposit could be applied to another ship and sailing - but NOT the same ship and sailing I had just canceled. Go figure

I was NEVER able to book a TBA person. (even for a sailing in Feb 2019 I-ll add her later if needed.

Sounds like the OP has booked Early saver rate and comes with severe penalties... people see that low rate and just jump on it not reading the fine print

Post #6, OP has already said it wasn't ES. They were answering my question, they just goofed up my quote in their reply is all.

As myself and others have stated - Carnival breaks their rules frequently:

Not only I have changed the name on an Early Saver booking (did have to pay the $50 fee) but I have moved an Early Saver booking to an entirely different cruise (Carnival transferred the deposit to the new cruise on different ship and charged me $50 per person to move from one Early Saver rate to an Early Saver rate on an entirely different ship.)

And I didn't have to beg, just asked nicely both times.

Sometimes it pays to look into ADDING a 3rd passenger. Let the other friend be a no show and pay the rate for the 3rd pax in the cabin to get the other person IN the room. There are times when it makes sense (after final payment time/penalty time) to cut your losses.

I had a cabin booked and needed to cancel one person. We found another person to cruise in her place. My TA was able to transfer her booking and insurance to the new person with out any charge. We were really surprised we didn’t need to pay for a new insurance policy for the new person.

Do you mind if I ask how long ago you changed a name on a Early Saver booking?

I'm sure the rules of the rate you booked where presented during the booking process. Everyone should understand the cancellation penalties prior to booking or get cancel for any reason insurance.
