I always chuckle when DW tells me that 'X' hotel/casino has offered us a 'free' room at their hotel.;)

 

I then have to bring her down to reality by reminding her that no, she has already paid for that 'free' room, many times over!;p

However I also have a chance to win some money, and I get some perks.

Not a very good chance IMHO..

The casino be it on land or at sea rates me on my play and gives me comps accordingly.

 

Bolding is mine. Is this gambler code for the casino gives me comps based on how much I've lost at their establishment? Which is really what happens..

I don’t think there’s much of a debate. You either like to gamble or you don’t. You obviously don’t. That’s fine. For the rest of us, who quite enjoy our casino time, it’s how we like to spend our extra money. If we get perks such as rooms or dinners, fabulous. Even without the perks, I would still gamble as much as I do. Non-gamblers don’t get it. Spend your money how you wish, I spend $500 on a pair of shoes. Others would never dream of it. I saved $700 on my cruise due to my gambling, I say, yay! Another pair of Jimmy Choos for me. I’ve seen people spend thousands on a Neptune suite, that’s not worth it to me. But, a nice Prada purse, worth more to me than a suite.

 

We each like to spend our money how we wish. I just wanted to let the gamblers out there know, you could get a nice discount. Win or lose.

My slot budget for each cruise is $300.00, which I usually lose. Not a big gambler for sure. We've been blessed with the casino rate for our last 4 HAL cruises. Our discount casino rate is usually about 30-35% (Canadian). We just booked Koningsdam for 2019 and we saved $1600.00 total for both of us. For us, the casino rate is fantastic!

 

 

Wow. For a $300 investment on your last cruise, saving $1600 sounds like a great deal on your next cruise. It sounds like you splurged on a nice room, but saved a little $$. I hope to score some nice deals in the future, too!

I am also one who enjoys the slots. Makes no sense. I don't enjoy shopping when traveling, drink very little so gambling is my entertainment.

I do get casino discounts on Holland and Princess and what I lose on slots is less than what I get on the discounts so in a way I come out ahead. Surely the discounts will some day go away but I am enjoying them for now and so my husband is happy when I visit the casino. We just got our first deep discount cruise on Princess which I never expected to get. My budget is about $20 a day.

We got lucky on the slots.The thing is we olay anyway so the discounted room is a bonus plus we always get a casino credit anywhere from 100 dollars to 800 dollars. TOM

Thoughts from a long time gambler:

 

It is a form of entertainment for me, not as a way to make money. I am a "small time" gambler and set a strict limit on my losses per day and in total.

 

One should understand the odds/rules of the game you are playing. Some games are simple, others require some thought to make the "best" bet. While overall the odds favor the house, you can reduce their "take" from you by being informed - this allows you to play longer within your budget.

 

If you are going to gamble anyway, be sure you maximize the benefits you get from the casino for your play. Make sure your card is in the machine EVERYTIME you play (for table games be sure they have your card registered each time you sit down). While you should not play just to earn these benefits, since you are playing anyway, get the most back from the casino that you can. A good example of this is the Casino Rate discussed in this topic.

 

Know that the onboard casinos generally offer far worse odds than land based ones (after all, they have a captive audience). So, unless you are very lucky, it is very hard to beat them over time. Being a math person, I gravitated to the best odds situations (a long time ago counting cards at Blackjack, playing "full pay" video poker,etc.) and I used to be able to pretty much breakeven or have small losses (before considering comps earned). I know that since the odds are so much worse onboard, I need to limit my "investment", so now it just for entertainment.

I couldn’t have said it better. I gamble to have fun. I see it as my entertainment budget. If I get some perks and a discounted cruise fare, even better. We booked our cruise for next summer, but since I see we have a casino rate, we might go on Christmas cruise!
