MarLieb Posted May 21, 2018 #1 Share Posted May 21, 2018 Hi everyone! We are currently considering a Seabourn cruise for December. We need a stateroom for 3 (or two connecting cabins, which don't appear to be available) and I looked at the deck plans and there didn't appear to be any left. I then called Seabourn and was told there were still many staterooms available that could accommodate three and I got pricing for a Penthouse Suite (as we would like, at least, a separate area in which the third guest can sleep). I'm just wondering - do they bring a rollaway bed into a suite when a third guest is booked and, if so, what are those beds like? Thank you for any information you may have! Have not seen any rollaway beds on ship. We are in a Penthouse Suite now and they probably use the sofa for the third bed.
princeton12321 Posted May 22, 2018 #3 Share Posted May 22, 2018 It’s a pullout sofa and it’s not particularly comfortable. You’ll want to ask for a mattress egg crate or three. There are no rollaway beds in the traditional sense that you’d see at a hotel on land.
Able Seaman H Posted May 25, 2018 #4 Share Posted May 25, 2018 My specialist topic :) Bespoke pull out sofas are rare on Seabourn even in supposedly designated 3 person suites. We always end up with a roll away bed. I do have a bit of an issue with the pricing of 3 person suites, particularly if trying for the guarantee rate. You end up having a long drawn out battle which takes the edge off the whole process. The argument is that there are limited 3 person suites which you have already discovered is not true. Any suite can be converted for 3 people. I'm also not sure why the third person should pay more to share a Penthouse suite when you have already paid for it with the first 2 passengers. The third person fare sould be a percentage of the cheapest fare available in my humble opinion. Once on board the cruise is excellent. Back to your question. Penthouse suite is ideal for a roll away bed which will be located in the dining table area. The choice is yours but we opt to have it taken away when the suite is cleaned in the morning and re-instated during turn down whilst we are at dinner. Occasionally we have had a rather poor quality roll out bed but ask for it to be replaced with something more substantial. They do have better ones knocking around. Henry :) Henry, Have you been successful in getting the guarantee rate (OB) for 3 people? If so, did they give you the third person at 50% off the guarantee rate? Personally, the third person rate is a complete ripoff compared to other lines and is something Seabourn has never properly addressed. If you have had luck, what is your strategy? I have managed onboard credit in the past, but that has usually been after final payment. These days, Seabourn is offering OB's a lot earlier to fill their ships and having more 'Sales' that only apply to guarantee staterooms.
Able Seaman H Posted May 29, 2018 #6 Share Posted May 29, 2018 We have managed OB rates for the first 2 pax then 50% V1 for the third pax. I actually don't have a huge issue with that although technically it should be 50% of OB fare for the third person. Ultimately you are arguing over £150 / $200 and life is too short. We ended up in better than V1 accommodation. What I do object to is charging the original 2 guests V1 or higher, "the only 3 person suite left is V2, 3, 4, 5, 6 sir", when OB fares are available and you know full well any suite can be and is used as 3 person accommodation with a roll away bed. In 7 cruises (I think) we have only had one occasion when the sofa converted and was used as a bed. The rest were roll away beds. We have cruised Penthouse suite down. The third person should be charged as 50% of OB or V1 regardless of cabin grade booked because the first 2 passengers have covered the cost of the additional real estate. The third person fare is merely intended to cover their run of ship costs - food, drink, laundry, etc. We've done over 100 nights on Seabourn mostly taken during peak rate over the festive period and this topic has had us on the brink of walking away on several occasions. I love the Seabourn product but there are other cruise lines and more importantly other holidays. Our last independent land trip to Thailand was superb.... Rare texanaust Posted June 5, 2018 #7 Share Posted June 5, 2018 Just got off the phone with SB and there was no way they were having any third person OB rate. $3000 more for a V1 assigned-cruise still 5 1/2 months away with tons of availability:confused: . We booked MSC Yacht Club instead this time, so SB lost our business on this one. We'll be empty nesters in the not too distant future, so those OB deals will have to wait. Thecat123 Posted June 5, 2018 #8 Share Posted June 5, 2018 Putting it to you more knowledgeable Seabourn cruisers Would Seaborn rather see a full paying passenger sitting in a lifeboat as compared to a half paying passenger taking that spot due to the lifeboat capacity I have know idea how many spare spots are in the lifeboats Just thinking out loud and trying to think of a reason
SKP946 Posted June 6, 2018 #9 Share Posted June 6, 2018 Putting it to you more knowledgeable Seabourn cruisers I have know idea how many spare spots are in the lifeboats Just thinking out loud and trying to think of a reason I understand each lifeboat has a capacity of 150 people, on the "O" ships there are 4 (x150)=600 leaving just 150 spots for the crew. Of course there are all those inflatables as well. When I sit in a lifeboat being used as a tender in a calm sea I often wonder what it would be like packed with 150 people in a rough sea, in say Antarctica with rescue many hours or even days away! ( and I am not even going to think of the lack of toilet facilities) Would not be enjoyable:rolleyes:
jdk-atlga Posted June 6, 2018 #10 Share Posted June 6, 2018 I called SB today and asked the same thing about a 3rd person in a veranda cabin on the Odyssey. I was told that 1) it will be a rollaway bed and 2) the capacity of the ship/life boats will determine ultimate capability to have a third person in cabin. In other words, if the ship is already at capacity, then they couldn’t accommodate the request. And, yes, it would be 50% of the normal person rate.

SB via telephone said No, SB via email said YES and reinstated booking-took them a week to reply to my email (booking had already auto cancelled). Go figure, but yes they will do OB guarantee in certain circumstances (and 50% of OB for third person).
