Edge-ification of the Entire Fleet

Just received a mailing today about the upcoming Edge-ification of Celebrity's entire fleet. Millennium, Summit and Equinox will be Edge-ified in 2019 with the rest of the fleet going through the changes from 2020 to 2023. They are spending $500 million on these changes which will include redoing all cabins (the suites will be amazing), building The Retreat Sundeck and the Retreat Lounge for suite passengers. All restaurants will be totally redone as well as the casino.

The one negative I see with this whole thing is an expansion of the "class system" within their ships with X building venues only for suite passengers. While some say that those in suites pay a lot and deserve these perks, others don't like the idea of a class system on their ships.

I think it is called the Celebrity Revolution, or similar. There have been a few threads on this.

Any updating, in my mind, should be good for the most part. No doubt the way of the future is to emphasise the suite experience, where the fares are often extremely high.

Many years ago I started sailing on ships that had class destinction. You had your assigned deck chair and seat in the dining room. The more expensive cabins had chairs closer to the pool. The further from the pool indicated what type of cabin you booked. When Celebrity started sailing, it was a no class system. You might spend more money for a larger cabin or a more desirable location. There were no reserved deck chairs or suite dining rooms. Everyone got the same service. It was superb. Aside from your cabin, everyone had access to everywhere on the ship. The dining room was excellent. Buffet was elegant. Over the years, Celebrity has created more distinctions. Each time that I sail, it seems that there are more venues that exclude the ordinary cruiser. If they create a suite pool area, that would exclude more venues. When does it stop?

I agree that losing space for exclusive use is an issue. But I’ve not seen any plans on a suite pool as part of the ‘Edge Update’ (thought i’d another name to it!). We booked early on Edge (a B2B) to experience the new approach, and just started looking at going on the Summit in the Fall of 2019 after it’s updates.

Celebrity is our Line of choice, but look forward to them upgrading and making changes. We are not Suite users. They look great, but a Veranda, and hopefully the Infiinte Veranda will meet our needs quite fine.

Change is Good. As i said on another similar thread, we start knitpicing when we get too familiar.
