Grandma Dazzles Posted September 23, 2018 #26 Share Posted September 23, 2018 It's unfortunate that no-one can answer my question, but we are inclined to just leave them and not worry about it. It is an interesting debate though Our next trip is 14 days in a JS, so $17.50 per person each day - a lot more than the hundred bucks per person mentioned earlier P&O have just announced they are stopping gratuities next year and as cruising becomes more global, I think this is how it will go. It will mean the cruise price going up, but I think most would prefer this system. Especially the staff, who would know how much they are earning each week, but also because that 20% don't pay tips thing is a fantasy - there are queues in Australia to get tip money back ;) Just FYI gratuities on a junior suite are $14.50 per person per day - no different than a standard cabin. Full suites are $17.50 per day.

Just assure your wife that the main dining room is only a portion of the dining staff's portion. As mentioned before, anywhere you eat on a ship is covered by the auto gratuities. You are giving to those that serve you and your wife. I fail to see the difference between paying the gratuities inclusive with the price of a cruise, paying them in cash at the end of the cruise (as all cruise lines used to do), or having them automatically added to our shipboard account. It's the same money coming from the same pocket (yours or mine).

TEXASMUNK Posted September 23, 2018 #29 Share Posted September 23, 2018 I see your point but you are missing a few keys. If you eat breakfast, you have staff that share in the tips...the staff that fill the glasses, the staff the clean the tables, etc. We too now only dine in either Chops or Giovanni's but we leave the tips. The folks that back up the bartenders....clean glasses, more beer, restock the lemons and limes, etc. Just easier to not worry about being fair.
