Rare POA1 Posted November 26, 2018 #1 Share Posted November 26, 2018 (edited) Let's see if this works. (Someone will have to tell me, since I'm logged into my account and would be able to see it regardless.) If it works, it should be the photo from the Google server and not use up any of my space here at Cruise Critic. Let me know if you see it. And, if you are feeling nerdy enough, check the image source and tell me if it's coming from here invisioncic.com or Google googleusercontent.com.) If it's really coming from Google, I can write up a tutorial, because in the words of the philosopher Vanilla Ice, "If there is a problem, yo, I'll solve it." (Check out the hook while my DJ revolves it.) Edited November 26, 2018 by POA1

Aulanis Posted November 26, 2018 #3 Share Posted November 26, 2018 (edited) No it isnt there and I am logged into cc.com and google Try using copy image then just paste in a reply box instead of presumably copy image location. BUT yes it will use up part of your attachment allocation, so maybe not worth trying. We covered this here https://boards.cruisecritic.com/topic/2596430-embed-photos/ This is URL https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/ad_4ZV9tBt-5Ku-KZ_hnaQwlFUBOfs8bf2EC4DH-hGav8YhBmhxhsAeG_YqjCAfzjqQ12FQc_PK29p_qp7Y_GqcAwxLCGybMawFz3ht0eliDXcQbsFbIiOWBrmlxhNdgzLU2onDi2KhA0dh7uAJ9IW2IIpcS5dBWE_O_KMRSRUyiotqIo4CHXr6cI4o5jPMUNuBu3pVofM6bp6-A0d9l2fDOx8oCr20IL1829P-1suDLU793zAPVZTnpGehwi2R7d8oTFukTPXMTt6gLQcCU3WYQvSzczQDfFm4eyIu-9qESmTXW_dDGkaKOHc4rZejdO5BXI1Fgt3GUBKvyM5AOkf9vOlhqdAg3qBsWretHeXDdsCn-WWXbdjPZSvQ03AHgru1Oplz1ptZYa-20sAfuwpMLN9GOUwAki6JGkzlI_pjfrcr2TDMy977ZsliReH5gfNvI8v4MK4KGsd8V89P0aAY56OfbDz2WrHqoNyFwTsHyb1DV1UisiEMK4fmW7FMUhnXyrai2Rho3CgV2b5wEFFHCq6GIYA9M1tka35nweEDk7s67TcVqURw66VYTiBkjWiwpwgun4nweMwAfThtlX-7gGCbJuQ=s1152-w1152-h864-no Edited November 26, 2018 by Aulanis

I'm seeing it appear and disappear so it's probably not worth trying to embed the images since they'll probably break any embedding eventually. I just wanted to see if there was a workaround. I'm not feeling optimistic. I have my own servers, so I usually host images there. (I used to use the paid version of Tapatalk to quickly upload photos from my phone, since it had no storage limit for practical purposes.) The best bet for people who want to upload and share images from a free, 3rd party host is probably Imgur. They allow direct linking and embedding. I'm going to give them a test drive and see if it's a practical solution.

I was trying to avoid using my allocation. If I'm going to do that, it's easier to just upload the files from my phone after I batch process them down to 800 px wide at 85% quality. Aulanis Posted November 26, 2018 #7 Share Posted November 26, 2018 I was going to have another crack at Imgur but itused to be actively blocked by CC on the old system. There are a number of threads on the subject maybe in the Photo boards and in the Test. any mention of imgur came up as I**** in the links. The reason for it may be that in Imgurs Rules it used to say you cant do it AND that they might take action against the site showing the pictures as well as deleting the the picture owners account. Guess CC thought it better to just not allow the pics as against maybe getting blamed if anyone lost all their pics. Who knows. I did have some correspondence with CC but they didnt seem to know why it was starred out but it had been so for years. Correspondence from Imgur confirmed that was their rule at the time I asked. I just signed up for Imgur and they're actively promoting the fact that you can embed their images on 3rd party sites. (Really.) Let's see if the embed works now. Rare POA1 Posted November 26, 2018 Author #9 Share Posted November 26, 2018 Interesting fact: CC block embedding of Imgur image links using the Insert other media > Insert from URL action. It also fails to auto-translate the image link into an image on the site. It doesn't asterisk it, aka "dirty words filter", like it used to. However.... Imgur has an option to copy a BBCode link [IMG]**Image*URL***[/IMG} and that works fine. That's how I got the photo of Poohby Joe in the cabana on the Nieuw Amsterdam in the post above. Hmm.... Aulanis Posted November 26, 2018 #10 Share Posted November 26, 2018 (edited) Well here is the rule as it is NOW! Stuff not to do If someone else might own the copyright to it, don't upload it. Don't upload gore, "hate speech" (i.e. demeaning race, gender, age, religious or sexual orientation, etc.), or material that is threatening, harassing, defamatory, or that encourages violence or crime. Don't upload illegal content such as child porn or nonconsensual ("revenge") porn. Don't hotlink to adult content or to file-sharing, gambling, torrent, warez, or Imgur rip-off sites. Don't impersonate someone else. Also, don't use Imgur to host image libraries you link to from elsewhere, content for your website, advertising, avatars, or anything else that turns us into your content delivery network. If you do – and we will be the judge – or if you do anything illegal, in addition to any other legal rights we may have, we will ban you along with the site you're hotlinking from, delete all your images, report you to the authorities if necessary, and prevent you from viewing any images hosted on *****. We mean it. LATE EDIT - I notice imgur has been starred out!!! in the above Might just try ***** yes that used to say i M. G u r. When I created my account, the little tutorial took me here: https://help.*****/hc/en-us/articles/210076663-Uploading-Content where I see: If you do hover, you'll see options: Edit image: If you need to crop, rotate, add text, or edit that image, now's your chance! Learn more here. Get share links: Looking for HTML or BBCode? This is where you'll find it! Download image: This lets you download the image. Delete image: If you click this, you'll be given these two options. Remove from this Post: the image will no longer appear on this post but will still be uploaded on Imgur and can be found by its direct link. Delete Image from Account: the image will be removed from the post and also deleted from your Imgur account and Imgur. There's a whole tutorial on uploading and sharing your vacation photos. Google Photos is pretty clear about not allowing embedding. Before they killed Picasa, you could embed with Picasa. Globaliser Posted November 28, 2018 #14 Share Posted November 28, 2018 I use tinypic - I've done this for years without objection from, or problems on, CC. Having come to this late, this is what I now see: There's a line of apparently-random digits, letters and other characters which look like they might be the unique locator of an image or other object. However, although it looks like text, it is an image file. The URL of the image file locates it at https://accounts.google.com/ServiceLogin . However, when I try to call the file directly using the full URL, Google is asking me to login. So that alone may possibly account for the image not appearing for anyone who doesn't have a Google account or isn't signed in.

Actually, the image appeared to everyone for a little while. It does not appear now, even for me. Google doesn't want you to link to the images directly. The URLs you get aren't persistent. They only work for a while. I've used tinypic on the past, like you without issue. I was looking for an option that I could sync to from my phone. (My super zoom camera already syncs to my phone.) I could either use my paid Dropbox account or my own server. I decided to go with the server and installed an ftp sync client on my phone. I can always revert to the image storage on CC if needed.
