My friend and her son are arriving on Costa Deliozosa this month. What do you recommend, if they do not buy an

expensive  excursion or are there any inexpensive excursions at the port? Thanks for the info.

Private port area, not private island.  You could taxi into Porta Plata, walk around, there is a donation based Amber Museum (with a jewelry store at the end but their prices and service were not bad for a tourist trap.)

The fort was ok and the surrounding area nice.  There is also a chocolate factory that does free tours (shop after).

A tour might be more cost effective than a bunch of cab rides though as it does other things and included admission to some.

Why does it cost so much to take a taxi from Amber Cove to Puerto Plata ?  $35?

Walk to center of town is 7.5 miles, but I can walk 3.5 miles to the outskirt of town.

Is it OK to walk on the highway?

Never been there yet.  Thanks.

Supply and demand.  It's not really safe walkable at least from what I observed (possibly doable), its hot, and the cruise port doesn't allow private guides in so the taxi's have limited competition.    I also have no idea what you would be walking through (I will leave that to locals).

You can book a tour with a reputable company for around $50pp as well, which other than the walk to the pickup is a good value.
