Tarquin Posted January 5, 2019 #1 Share Posted January 5, 2019 Back in 2017 we were invited to submit suggested names for a new ship to be launched in 2020. Having submitted a robust, well thought out name with historical and personal merit we are surprised not to have been invited to the launch party and maiden sailing 😉 Has a name been chosen yet? P-L-B Posted January 5, 2019 #2 Share Posted January 5, 2019 Yes, it's Iona. I am surprised you are asking as it's been discussed in the forums on several occasions.

Tarquin Posted January 7, 2019 Author #5 Share Posted January 7, 2019 (edited) From memory we submitted 'Carthage' the name of a former P&O ship that our late father was Quartermaster on with secondary options using his christian and middle names. Douglas and Lawrence. Long shots but a back story with some personal connection to the P&O fleet at the tail end of the 40's was our reasoning. Britboys Posted January 7, 2019 #6 Share Posted January 7, 2019 The naming competition was typical P&O shoreside. They gave guidelines to suggest the type of name they wanted (takes account of their heritage but also sums up the innovation and evolution of the new ship) and then came up with a name that bears no relation to what they suggested they wanted... Monorail Orange Posted January 7, 2019 #8 Share Posted January 7, 2019 For a second I thought this was about the name of the other new ship - the '22 one.

Monorail Orange Posted January 7, 2019 #10 Share Posted January 7, 2019 Yes, that's the one. Iona's sister. Surely she'll have a sympathetic name - I'll start scouring the map for other small islands...

Surely she'll have a sympathetic name - I'll start scouring the map for other small islands... This is not the first time an island has been chosen. Previously Oronsay has been used and more than once (remember SS Happy Wanderer on Carry On Cruising). Typically Scottish Islands and these go back to the Orient Steam Navigation Company aka Orient Line which used them. A Scottish theme in connection with cruising relates to influences from people like The Earlof Inchcape, P&O chairman. A Scottish baronial style on board ships was fairly general for the UK (note Fred's ships also seem to have Scottish temed names). 51% of the shares for the Orient Line were acquired by P&O Steam Navigation Company in 1919 and this line was absorbed by P&O completely in 1966. The Orient Line had an "OR" theme and used names like; Orcades, Orsova and Oriana. Basically Oriana is an Orient Line name and not originally P&O which might surprise many. The P&O flag colours relate to the royal households of Portugal, blue and white and Spain, red and gold, another surprising fact. FiftyOnePlus Posted January 7, 2019 #12 Share Posted January 7, 2019 Oh Gawd, not another one. If its as bad as Iona, I dont want to know. That Iona looks as stylish as an Airport Lounge inside...not so appealing. And way too big
